Overview

This book is designed to help us look deeply into the sanctification process, particularly for those who have been in bondage to substances and behaviors that have shadowed them for many years. It will unveil what are often hidden causes for an inability to find freedom from chronic sin patterns. While perfect holiness in our thoughts and actions may be unobtainable in this life, it is most certainly more obtainable than we can even imagine. This book is for those who want to go all the way with God, who truly want to be His disciple.

Reviewed by Nancy Humphries for Sursum Corda, March 2002 Transformed Into His Image: Hidden Steps on the Journey to Christlikeness, published by Mastering Life Ministries, Inc., is a timely arrival for the lay “seeker,” the minister, and anyone desirous of helping others. The Rev. Dr. David Kyle Foster, cathedral Canon at Church of the Messiah in Jacksonville, Florida, and author of this new book, issues a clarion call to seek true intimacy with the Father and to become holy as He is holy. He has pulled together a collection of writings that reflects on the path and provision that God has made for being holy in this world of sin and reasons why it fails, and he interprets the “spiritual passages” of the Christian life. Well known as an authority in the field of healing for what he calls the sexually broken, Dr. Foster shares events in his own journey to healing and holiness. He calls for a return to the true purpose of life, to authentic love, and a life of humility and grace. He describes performance orientation as the “single greatest problem in the world and in the church” and offers the solutions to surviving the wilderness periods when we are most vulnerable. He brings correction to our evangelistic efforts and exposes the traps that Satan uses to lure the unsuspecting into sin, as well as giving the battle plan for “taming the wild horses (temptation to sin) within.” Dr. Foster describes the healing process, shows the erroneous assumptions that can hinder one coming out of bondage to sin, and explains why some remain trapped in sin and brokenness. He offers the evidence for a true relationship with God and gives a snapshot view of what the healed person looks like.  To this writer, the highlight of this book is Dr. Foster’s attempt to lay out the Biblical plan for God and man being wed through Christ and the Church. His explanation is sure to ignite a fire in the reader for more of God as we realize the primary reason God created us and saved us is that He wants to marry us!   This book calls the Christian deeper into the life that God created us to have and shows God’s provision for making it possible. And finally, it guides us into examining whether we have been invited by God to minister to others. It also serves as a great reference manual for further study.  I have wept, rejoiced, sat awestruck and humbled as I have read the pages.  What a gift to the body of Christ.  It is truly an awesome book!
