Purpose: The purpose is to focus on medical errors encountered in transfusion medicine. These worthy objectives are well met by this book.
Audience: The intended audience is medical practitioners involved with various aspects of transfusion medicine — i.e., clinical laboratory scientists, physicians, residents in training. It also would be of interest to anyone interested in quality issues in laboratory medicine, including those encountered in transfusion medicine. The authors are quite credible authorities.
Features: Wow, this book packs a wallop of high-quality information! It is deceptively small (140 pages), yet touches upon every known transfusion issue associated with medical error. The writing is crisp, clear, and concise — the hallmark of series editor Mike Laposata's presentation style and inferring his editorial pen. The format follows that of other volumes in the series: brief introduction, quick clinical framing case, identification of error(s), and final bulleted standards of care. I really liked this book as much as I have liked the others in the series. There is no subtlety in the clinical recommendations and this bluntness is much appreciated. The medical errors discussed occur so commonly this book should be required reading for all physicians, especially those in training.
Assessment: If you practice transfusion medicine, get it. If you are resident in training, memorize it and it will serve you and your patients well throughout your career.
