Whether it is chosen or thrust upon you, change brings both opportunities and turmoil. Since first published 25 years ago, Transitions has helped hundreds of thousands of readers cope with these issues by providing an elegantly simple yet profoundly insightful roadmap of the transition process. With the understanding born of both personal and professional experience, William Bridges takes readers step by step through the three stages of any transition: The Ending, The Neutral Zone, and, in time, The New Beginning. Bridges explains how each stage can be understood and embraced, leading to meaningful and productive movement into a hopeful future. With a new introduction highlighting how the advice in the book continues to apply and is perhaps even more relevant today, and a new chapter devoted to change in the workplace, Transitions will remain the essential guide for coping with the one constant in life: change.

In 1970, William Bridges, an English professor, was experiencing a difficult time in his life. A scholar, he decided to learn all that he could about the psychology of transition. Eventually, he taught a course in it then he developed his ideas into a book, which quickly became the definitive source on the topic. Psychologists, counselors and other mental health professionals recognized it as a breakthrough self-help text. With insights, information and concepts that you¿ll be able to apply to everyday life, Bridges leads you through an often angst-ridden process. With his advice, you¿ll identify and understand your personal development timeline and learn to use change to your advantage. Transitions, ultimately, result in achieving real growth, both spiritually and psychologically. We recommend this classic book to people anticipating or in the midst of professional or personal turning points.

Change is a constant fact of life, but this author is the first who has pointed out that transitions are a separate and distinct process than change. The structure that he puts around the process and the stages of transition are a great help and comfort in dealing with whatever we may be going through or looking to change in our lives. By showing us how to think about changing internally when external factors change, the author shows us how to use change to grow and develop into who we are meant to be.

This book is a gem, filled with so many valuable insights for any stage of life. Unlike some self-help books, it is short and simply written. I find myself reading only a few pages or a chapter every few weeks, because it leaves me with so much to think about. This is a book I'll be coming back to again and again.

This book was okay, but it was difficult to skip around and read different parts of it (which I like to do.) I prefer books that have shortened sections/paragraphs that I can digest easier. I very rarely read a nonfiction book from page 1 to whatever. Read the author's newer book, "The Way of Transition" & really enjoyed that one...earmarking & underlining lots of sections.

I'm not a fan of self-help books. This was first given to me by my sister, and I avoided reading it for a few months. When I finally picked it up, I was pleasantly surprised. Transitions is written and thoughtful. The author gives you a way to think about the big changes you make in your life. For me, the most useful insight was that transitions can not only make you look forward in anticipation, they make you grieve for the past, even when the past was perhaps not so great. I have since given this book out to friends who find themselves in a confusing spot because of both expected and unexpected life changes.
