Impressively varied, though much too brief at less than 30 minutes, Blue Spark's debut displays an adventurous country-rock sound that is willing to step outside of the boundaries implied by the genre. Leading off with the hook-heavy power twang of "Better Me," Blue Spark is a little more tuneful and radio-friendly than bands typically classified with them. The solid roots rock groove, accented by nice harmony vocals and organ, of "This Town," and the infectious fuzzy guitar lines of the pop-punk "Parks of Olympia" reveal a refreshing eclecticism. Leading off with the hook-heavy power twang of "Better Me," Blue Spark is a little more tuneful and radio-friendly than bands typically classified with them. The solid roots rock groove, accented by nice harmony vocals and organ, of "This Town," and the infectious fuzzy guitar lines of the pop-punk "Parks of Olympia" reveal a refreshing eclecticism. Lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter Garth Reeves, formerly of Goodness, has a nice raspy and nuanced voice, well-suited to the soulful, big choruses of "Two Trains" and the loose R&B feel of "Cupid Song." In fact, one gets the impression that Blue Spark could make a rather smooth transition into a fairly straight R&B band if they were so inclined. The gospel-flavored piano of "Bitter Moon" is a fine coda to an album that crams a lot of music into seven tracks.
