Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shelly McCoy
This book about trap and skeet shooting gives insight into a challenging sport that many kids and adults know nothing about, especially in certain geographic areas. Many popular sports involve hitting a target, and shooting a target with a gun for fun is something that has been around for hundreds of years. Skeet, which means shoot, is more like wild bird hunting than trap shooting is in that the targets are launched from two separate locations and fly across the field in front of the shooters. In trap shooting, only one trap throws clay pigeons. Short and easy-to-read or skim chapters about the materials needed, the rules, how to get involved in a shooting club, and some of the professionals involved in the sport are given. There are many photos throughout the book as well as a time line and fun facts at the end. Classes could discuss the history of shooting targets or how certain past Presidents of the United States liked to shoot targets; the physics or math of hitting a target; or a discussion of ethics related to guns.
