Joined by world-class local talent like Isaac Delgado, pianist Chucho Valdés, flutist "Maraca" Valle who also contributes arrangements, and congueroMiguel "Angá" Diaz, Nora once again proves that while her looks may be novel, her music isn't easily dismissed. Orquesta de la Luz, her former band, worked a confident New York salsa vibe, but her Havana exploration is right on time: The arrangements are classic, underpinned by trés and ...

Orquesta de la Luz, her former band, worked a confident New York salsa vibe, but her Havana exploration is right on time: The arrangements are classic, underpinned by trés and percussion, and deftly encompass old-fashioned son on the duet with Delgado, "Cuestiones del Amor", filin on the Latin standard "Sabor a Mi," given a lush depth by Valdés's piano, and rumba on the three-movement "Descarga Cubana". There's even a hot "Cachita" arranged by Buena Vista Social Club mastermind Juan de Marcos González. With a husky voice comparable to Miami sensation Albita -- and no problems procuring a visa -- Nora deserves her share of the U.S. salsa spotlight.
