About the Author

Dr. Mark J. Ashley is founder and president/CEO of Centre for Neuro Skills (CNS), which has operated postacute brain injury rehabilitation programs in Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Francisco since 1980. In 2011, Dr. Ashley participated in the Blue Ribbon Panel on Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress convened by Generals Peter W. Chiarelli and Joseph Dunford, and he established the CNS Clinical Research and Education Foundation, a nonprofit research organization. He serves on the board of directors of the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) and holds several positions in that organization, including chairman emeritus, chair of the fund development committee, and member of the Business and Professional Council. Dr. Ashley also serves on the board of directors of the California Brain Injury Association and is chairman emeritus. He is an adjunct professor at the Rehabilitation Institute of the College of Education at Southern Illinois University and a member of the advisory board of the Center for Applied Neuroscience, University of Cyprus. Dr. Ashley received his master’s degree in speech pathology and a doctorate of science from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He is a licensed speech-language pathologist in California and Texas and is a certified case manager.

Dr. David A. Hovda is the director of the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center, which was created in 1990. It incorporates teaching, research, patient care, and service for patients suffering from traumatic brain injury. Dr. Hovda has received a number of awards for his research on brain injury and recovery of function, including the "Strength of the Nation Award" from the United States Army in 2011. This is the highest civilian award given by the Secretary of the Army in recognition of Dr. Hovda’s efforts to help treat military personnel suffering from mild traumatic brain injury returning from theater. In addition, Dr. Hovda received the Alumni Association’s James F. Zimmerman Award from the University of New Mexico in 2012 for his research accomplishments recognized in the field of traumatic brain injury. Dr. Hovda is most well known internationally for his translational work on the pathobiology of traumatic brain injury and has devoted most of his career to understanding the mechanisms of recovery of function. Dr. Hovda continues to serve as a consultant for professional sport organizations as well as the Department of Defense, addressing issues related to traumatic brain injury and recovery of function. Dr. Hovda is a professor of neurosurgery and of molecular and medical pharmacology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He received his doctoral degree under the supervision of Dr. Dennis M. Feeney in the field of Physiological Psychology at the University of New Mexico. He completed his postdoctoral training in neurophysiology under Dr. Jamie Villablanca at UCLA.

Description: This review of brain injury care begins with a discussion of the neuroscience of brain injury, including pathophysiology and neuroanatomy, then continues with coverage of the clinical and medical management of traumatic brain injury and select post-traumatic sequelae, targeted therapy interventions and approaches, and long term considerations of post-traumatic care in a case management section. The accompanying website resources provide access to an ebook with an application to take notes and make flashcards. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide comprehensive diagnostic and treatment guidance related to traumatic brain injury for all practitioners involved in brain injury care. This edition adds the role of neuroscience in the discussion of rehabilitation and management of traumatic brain injury. These objectives are worthy and the book is needed to continue to foster collaboration among all levels of practitioners in all specialties involved in brain injury care. The effort to include the spectrum of references from specific neuroscience mechanisms to long term chronic health concerns is quite the undertaking. Naturally, this leaves out some important specific details and topics, but it gives the targeted audience a solid foundation of references to use. Presenting the material in print is certainly valuable to allow for direct cross reference of material between the major sections of neuroscience, medical, therapy, and case management. The ebook format seems slightly cumbersome.
Audience: The book targets medical practitioners, including trainees, residents, and fellows, as well as attending physicians, not only in physical medicine and rehabilitation, but also neurology and potentially neurosurgery. It also targets allied health professionals, including physical, occupational, speech, and behavioral therapists, as well as psychologists and neuropsychologists. The book meets the needs of this broad audience. The authors have significant clinical and research experience, but they are not traumatic brain injury physicians.
Features: The book reviews the mechanisms of brain injury and the subsequent pathology that results, and it covers neuroanatomy well. It goes on to important medical management topics including neuropharmacology and neurotransmitters, as well as select sequelae of brain injury. The book gives an in-depth review of neuropsychological and cognitive behavioral approaches to brain injury care. It concludes with section on a variety of topics in the chronic brain injury patient. The writing is clear throughout. Some topics are separated into different sections of the book that would be more logically presented as subsequent chapters in the same section. This would promote continuity. There is some unique color art that is particularly helpful with the neuroanatomy. There are also fairly simplistic diagrams of neurotransmitter functioning and neural connections, which is appropriate for the broad target audience.
Assessment: This book offers a good quality review of traumatic brain injury diagnosis, assessment, and treatment across multiple domains and fields of practice. It is a suitable introductory book for the intended audience. This update is justified given the inclusion of a rather in-depth review of the neurophysiology and neuropathology related to traumatic brain injury.
