Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Naomi Williamson
In this delightful book Galbraith talks about human babies as they "creep or crawl" and animal babies as they "travel in surprising ways." Dippold's illustrations of active human babies, done in watercolor and colored pencil, are matched with photographs of baby animals, such as emperor penguins, spider monkeys, red kangaroos, loons, crocodiles, and lions, with one of their parents, in their own habitat. The illustrations and pictures are placed on facing pages to show animal babies and human babies with similar methods of "travel." As the mother kangaroo and her joey bounce across the page, a baby bounces in a swing as his daddy bounces a baseball in his hand. Using terms like float and drift, paddle, glide, and bobble along, Galbraith and Dippold demonstrate the comparisons of the two kinds of babies in a charming way that will be enjoyed by young readers. The text lends itself to action and children will want to act out the motions of animals as they follow along with the book.
