Overview

Katie Carson is an eight year old who is chock full of mischief and adventure. When she accidently discovers her grandmother's primitive time travel machine in Grandma's basement, her imagination begins to work overtime. Katie is determined to be a space traveler while her parents struggle with the repercussions of such an adventure.

This is a family story of love, acceptance, responsibility and growth. While Grandma wants to live out her life with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, her three children argue for safety and security for their aging mother. The family dynamics are a growth process themselves and readers will gain a lot of wisdom to put to use in their own lives.

On the pretense of having "sewing lessons," Katie learns patience, honesty, goal-setting and respect for her family. Katie's grandma does not lecture to teach; rather she lives her life in such a way that those who care to model her behaviors come away with a new outlook on life.

I laughed and I cried and I'd read this book again in a heartbeat. Grandma is a rather eccentric woman who teaches her granddaughter Katie in a somewhat unorthodox manner. She does not direct or lecture; rather she uses everyday tasks such as sewing, cleaning and adventure to provide lessons to Katie, her three sisters and her little brother. When Katie accidentally stumbles upon a somewhat archaic time travel machine, she begs her mother to "Travel with Grandma." This creates chaos among Grandma's own three children. Grandma's youngest son wants to support his mother's need for adventure while the older, more practical son argues for safety above everything. Grandma's daughter only wants to protect her daughter Katie from harm. Katie gradually works her way into being able to travel, with certain stipulations. The adventures of the grandmother and the granddaughter are absolutely charming. And the reader learns a bit of history along the way. I think this book is suitable for children of middle school age and up. Grandparents will love the stories which will get them into a bit of nostalgia. This book is a charmer!

Reviewed by Joy Hannabass for Readers' Favorite Katie Dude liked to talk to her grandma because she could understand Grandma better than she could understand her parents and other adults. Even though her grandma had trouble falling around, she still told fun and interesting stories to Katie. In her book Traveling with Grandma, Dr. Karen Hutchins Pirnot takes readers on these awesome journeys as Grandma teaches Katie some interesting facts about American and family history, grammar, vocabulary, manners, and other great facts from the time travel machine made by Katie’s granddad. Come and travel with Grandma and Katie and you will find lots of fun and excitement. But tread carefully, because Grandma's own children want to make sure she is safe and secure as she is growing older.  What a fun and interesting story for kids to read and a really neat way to teach children about facts they need to learn for school. Grandma makes learning enjoyable in the way she uses the time travel machine. This will keep kids interested enough to finish reading the book. The book is pretty thick, so it is more for older kids, but it would be a wonderful book to read to your younger children over a period of time. Like reading a chapter or two each night. You really can’t go wrong with this amazing book. I just love it myself, so adults will get a lot of enjoyment out of Grandma’s travel stories as well. I really encourage you to pick up a copy of Traveling with Grandma for your child. Ms. Pirnot has other wonderful children’s books for all ages you should check out too.
