"The beach plays a major part in the lives of Californians. From Malibu down to Laguna, whatever the weather, on any day of the week, people will be using this narrow strip of sand between the land and the sea.

Surfers are always searching for the perfect waves and often find them north of Malibu. Anglers use every structure that juts into the sea to cast their lines. Joggers jog and skateboarders skate.

At Santa Monica and Venice, the weekend brings out a veritable circus of performers. Jugglers, people on roller skates, weight lifters and fast-food vendors are all out in force competing for the ever-present audience."
