    Your (political) slip is showing, Sara...

    I lived in Chile for a couple of years, at about the same time that Sara Wheeler was travelling around that country collecting material for this book. Wheeler is a good travel writer; I enjoyed reading 'Travels in a Thin Country', and it brought back many pleasant memories of my time and travels there, and of all of my Chilean friends. However, I think that at times, her left-of-center political orientation is like some prism she's looking through that influences everything she observes. Like so many Europeans of her political stripe, she seems rather overly obsessed with former military strongman Gen. Pinochet; it's as if he's her personal boogieman, stalking her across the pages and chapters. (I recall one instance where she describes a Chilean naval vessel sitting peacefully at anchor in a naval base as 'sinister-looking'--what's so 'sinister' about a ship!?) Lastly, for all her effusive and florid description of the magnificent Chilean landscape, the Chileans themselves are seldom portrayed in a very positive light--it's almost as if she thinks Chile would be paradise on Earth if it just weren't for all the Chileans there! I advise readers to travel to Chile themselves and discover all of its wonders--including its people.
