Overview

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota and Canada's Quetico park together form a wilderness reserve so vast and intricate that its hundreds of thousands of visitors each year can still find unspoiled beauty and solitude - it is possible to paddle for days there without seeing another soul. With stunning photography and lyrical nature writing, Travels in Canoe Country captures the experience of exploring by canoe and on foot these magnificent waterways. Gerald Brimacombe's photographs of pines overhanging still waters, dawn breaking on an island campsite, wild iris, or a gleaming chain of lakes seen from afar, portray this unique environment in every season, while Paul Gruchow's text takes the reader through a day spent canoeing in these northern waters - from the early morning mists to the evening cry of the loon. Along the way Gruchow reflects on the life of the imagination, the nature of work and of home, and our place in the wilderness, guiding us on his inner journey as well. Rising early, settling into a rhythm of paddling and portaging, passing through narrows, pausing to rest at an island, and gliding across the water as the light fades, the author takes us on a compelling journey through this spellbinding place, revealing its ability to bring renewal and peace. Patricia Hampl has provided a thoughtful introduction. A resource section at the back of the book offers information about area outfitters and guidebooks.

An exceptional tribute to the magnificent waterways of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northwestern Minnesota. Gruchow reflects on the life of the imagination, the nature of work and home, and our place in the wilderness, while Brimacombe's 84 glorious color photographs portray this unique environment in all four seasons.

Editorial Reviews

Gretchen Garner
This lovely volume is not a guidebook to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on the Minnesota-Canada border but a meditation in words and photographs upon the experience of being there. Gruchow takes us gently, and with several sidetrips, through a day of solitary canoe travel. Writing in the manner of Thoreau and Sigurd Olson, Gruchow is slow-going and a bit homilistic at first but gathers strength in a section observing the metamorphosis of a dragonfly; eventually, we are rapt in his experience and peace of mind. Brimacombe's beautiful color photographs, like the text, don't portray specific sites as much as moods and textures. Misty lakes, smoothly cascading streams, sunny paths in the woods, many views of the water meeting the shore, and colorful sunsets colorfully reflected--such images are beautifully interwoven with the text as a kind of separate-but-equal experience rather than illustration. For the reader who wants more about the Boundary Waters after enjoying the book, a bibliography and listing of outfitters is appended.
