Wells is a fine, fine writer and he takes a breezy but nicely reported literary approach to America's favorite beverage. This book is mostly travelogue of a his journey down the Mississippi hunting the Perfect Beer Joint. You meet eccentrics in bars, visit the Clydesdales, search for Elvis's favorite beer. But Wells delivers extremely fun and informative diversions--his chapter on beer yeast pirates is excellent, and he captures the zeal and passion of the Extreme Beer Movement. And by the way, he throws in a thoroughly researched history chapter which clearly, cleverly and with economy places the American beer scene into the global sweep of beer history.
