Overview

An enterprising and fearless traveller, Christina Dodwell has rafted white water rapids in Papua New Guinea, canoed down the Congo river, ridden horses across Turkey and through Africa, driven reindeer and dogs in Kamchatka, travelled around Madagascar in a horse-drawn stagecoach and journeyed alone through China. But for this journey from the Cameroun rain forest to the Atlantic, via the Sahara and Tombouctou, Christina had to learn to fly!
The author and her pilot-instructor progress in a series of hops, so she not only gets fantastic bird's eye views of forests and the limitless desert, but also has ample opportunity for exploring on the ground.
Travels with Pegasus combines the infinite variety of Africa with the exhilarating exposure of microlighting. Christina is a courageous and resourceful traveller whose curiosity about her fellow men and what may be over the next hilltop will, we hope, never be satisfied.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
In her latest adventure, Dodwell ( Traveller on Horseback ) takes to the air in an ultra-light plane called Pegasus for a trip through West Africa. Normally a solo traveler, she was accompanied this time by David Young, pilot, mechanic and flight instructor. They traveled to the rain forests of Cameroon, then north to Lake Chad; through northern Nigeria across the desert, to the remote mountains of Niger; then to Mali, Mauritania and, finally, to the Atlantic beaches of Senegal. Wherever they landed--for fuel caches or repairs to the aircraft--Dodwell set out on solitary exploration by foot, motorcycle, canoe or horseback. She discovered dinosaur bones in Niger, attended a festival in Mali, visited pygmy villages and Tuareg encampments. The author's lively curiosity, her empathy with people of other cultures and her interest in out-of-the-way places make her travels a treat for vicarious adventurers. (Nov.)
Library Journal
Dodwell ( A Traveller in China, LJ 3/15/86, A Traveller on Horseback in Eastern Turkey and Iran, LJ 4/15/89) has again written a well-researched, entertaining, and exciting book that gives a firsthand look at a little-known region. The author set out with a pilot in an ultralight aircraft, learning how to fly while covering terrain from jungle to desert. She experienced not only the anxieties of traveling in unknown lands, but also the occasional terrors of aviation: worry about navigational error, mechanical failure, and turbulence. The principal narrative concerns her ground travels through Cameroun, Nigeria, Niger, Mali, Mauritania, and Senegal. Dodwell is an excellent observer and intrepid explorer, although somewhat lacking in human warmth. Nonetheless, her book represents another adventuresome addition to her collection of works for the actual or armchair traveler.-- Melinda Stivers Leach, Precision Editorial Svces., Wondervu, Col.
