Overview

Fourteen-year-old Jennie's life is turning upside down. Her father has walked out, and her anguished mother seeks solace in pills. Her best friend practically abandons her to be with a boyfriend. It seems like Jennie's real best friend is her diary. Then she meets Mr. Johnstone, the substitute math teacher. Jennie has never met such a charismatic teacher. She feels honored when Mr. J. seems to single her out for special attention, and begins to fantasize about him as her boyfriend. When Mr. J. first reveals his feelings for her, she is thrilled by the relationship that grows outside the classroom walls. Then, slowly, Jennie's diary becomes a record of her loneliness, pain, and confusion. Will it also offer her a way to escape from this treacherous love?

Read an Excerpt

September 9th–Monday–1:15 a.m.

I just woke up with a cold spooky feeling running through me. At first I couldn’t figure out what it was and pulled myself deeper under my covers and put my pillow over my head, but the shivers just got worse . . . then I realized Mom and Dad were fighting again! I HATE IT . . . HATE IT . . . HATE IT . . . when they do that!

I can’t understand a single bit of what they are saying, but the feelings come through like giant rocks and electric shocks and fire darts. I want it to stop!!! Stop!!! Stop!!! I hate it! And I hate them for doing it! I don’t really hate them. Actually, I want, with all my might, to run into their room and snuggle up in their bed with them. Me in the middle being kissed and hugged and spoiled like when I was little.

Whatever happened to our loving, happy little family that used to play hide-and-seek in the house and have picnics on the floor in front of the fireplace on rainy days? And do all the fun nice things that we always used to do? Like talk and talk and talk and talk.

Monday–7:00 a.m.

My stupid old alarm clock just woke me up with its stupid old song, "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning." It’s hardly that! My pillow is all wet and soggy with tears and I’m as tired as if I had just climbed Mount Everest. I guess I cried myself to sleep again last night. I hate that!

Monday–7:36 a.m.

I just got out of the shower and finished drying my hair and I AM SO EMBARRASSED! How could I have felt all those horrible hating things about Mom and Dad last night?

As the warm bubbly water splashed and gurgled overmy body it washed all the badness away and made me think more like a sane person instead of like a dumb little kid. They have a right to disagree about things just like I do! They aren’t clones. They don’t have to just say "yes sir" or "yes ma’am" to each other to death about every little thing. Bridget and I sometimes have almost screaming matches over who played the best at some of our hockey games and other stuff that’s not all that important, so why couldn’t Mom and Dad have just been arguing about a movie they’d seen or Mom’s alcoholic sister Meg, who comes by occasionally and drives us all crazy, or . . . there are a million things . . . oh, I’m such a worrywart, look-for-trouble, negative, dumbhead sometimes.

    Introspective - "Treacherous Love"

This book makes you realize just how vulnerable children are. How they can be taken advantage of so easily by simply not knowing any better. They wouldn't know because they have not lived long enough to know. Anyone who has a child will appreciate this book, so that you can be aware of what might happen and why.
Jennie trys the best she can and it makes you wonder if that had been you, would the same thing occur?
Youth is a mixed up time and what is going on in parents lives will effect children as well, it is just so unfortunate.
The thing I wonder the most is: How is Jennie doing today?

A quick read, but kind of meh

I love most of the books edited by Beatrice Sparks, but this one wasn't as good in my opinion. I was excited when I read the excerpt, but after reading it, my excitement quickly faded. This wasn't a bad book, but nothing really substantial happens until the last 20 pages at most. The narrator is kind of whiny, yet boring to listen to. This is a good book for a trip in the car, or a lazy few hours. It's a fast read and took me roughly 2 hours to finish it.

    more from this reviewer

    2 and a half stars

Well this book wasn't that interesting. But if you read it you can notice how the main characher feels, but the main character keeps whining and things. And reaading this book makes me realaize that there are people out there who are offenders-even teachers, but it was sick the way jennie liked a way older TEACHER.

    A troublesome love

I waited a long time for this book and it turned out to be a bit of a let down. The main character Jennie's constant whinning is irritating and I found her to be a bit nieve. It's a slow in the beginging and takes awhile to get to what the book is about, her and Mr. Johnstone. Overall I liked the idea for the book (a student/teacher relationship) but it wasn't executed well.

    An interesting book.

I would give 8 out of 10 to this book. ¿Treacherous Love¿ is an interesting book. This book is about a fourteen year old girl called Jennie who has problems in her home and falls in love with her math teacher. The main characters of the story are Jennie, Mr. Johnstone and her two best friends Marcie and Bridgette. Jennie¿s parents are going through a divorce and she feels alone. Nobody pays attention to her or take care of her. Also, Jennie falls in love with her math teacher Mr. Johnstone. She thinks that he is the perfect guy for her. And the perfect guy that she imagined, was a person who only wanted to hurt her. He hurt Jennie in different ways, he gave her alcohol and he takes her pictures without her permission. But at the end of the story she found out that her teacher was someone who had problems with the law. Jennie finally new that Mr. Johnstone was not her real love.

Good, but not exactly perfect for a guy

The book ¿treacherous love¿ was about a 14 year old girl who tells her life through her diary. She explains what she hates, what she loves, and what good or bad things that had happened to her. The book to me was okay, but she Jennie did complain a lot in the beginning, and through the rest of the book in small parts. Her thoughts are so much like a normal teenage girl, so full of herself and is very sentimental. The Book is recommended to mostly girls, because they would be have more empathy. Guys would most likely be plain annoyed

    Treachrous Love

Treacherous Love was a great book. It follows 14 year Jennie throughout troubles she comes across such as her parents are going through a divorce and her falling in love with her teacher who deceives her in many ways. I recommend this book to teenage girls, because they can relate to many of the problems Jennie goes through. It's a book that will keep you interested from the time you pick it up and start reading.

Teenage Love and young girls 'photo sessions'.

Treacherous love is a novel about a young teenage girl who looks for love in all the wrong places. Mr. Johnstone, the sweet caring teacher of young middle school Jennie, is about to turn in to nothing short of a middle aged pervert. She goes through a rough middle school year, losing her dad, losing contact with her best friends, and being a third wheel in her best friends love triangle. I liked this book because it can really help girls of that age to understand the dangerous people in the world. I mainly recommend this book to middle school, or beginning high school girls.

Looking for love in all the wrong places

Jennie is a 14 year old that falls in love with her substitute math teacher. The main characters in this book are Jennie, JJ, her parents ,and her two best friends Marcie and Bridgette. The three girls have problems with their lives. I really like this book and I recommend it to teenage girls, it's a book that opens your eyes and lets you know not to trust anyone you meet.

Spaced in the air by Love

Out of 10 I will rate this book an 8, because it has a nice connection with the story and at the end the whole book turns upside down. Treacherous love is a book, that I learned a few things out of it. This book starts up slow repeating itself over and over again but as you keep reading it gets interesting. Treacherous Love is about a young girl that seems nobody cares for her until her teacher approaches her and caresses her in a way no one has. It seems in the beginning it was just love that they both felt for each other not caring about the age difference but it was wrong. What he did to her is something that could have been prevented by her not getting so involved with him. I recommend this book to all teenage girls (13-17) that feel that nobody cares for them, and they think life is all about guys, well is not. This book thought me to be careful who I choose to get into my life and you should gives limits to others towards you because people these days will take advantage of you.

    Life-Changing

I thought this book was going to be dirty at first, but it truly portrayed an issue that some teens face. The fact that it's a true story made me read it a few times to absorb it...and it changed my way of thinking in some teen issues.

    Treacherous love review

I enjoyed reading the book but it wasn't what i expected. I was hoping for something a little bit suspenseful. I was hoping that it would be better than Go ask alice or it happened to nancy. But it was weird how those type of tragedies exist. It made me think how good i got it in my life.

    soo sllllooowww

I've got a knack for reading books that are 'Anonymous' or 'teen pregnancy'. But this was very, very slow in the begining. All she does is complain! 'My life is soo alwful!! blah, blah blah!' She and JJ start out slowly, it's not how it sounds the despription. They never come out and say whether or not she and JJ actually sleep together.
