Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Safely back in Gilead, Roland, Alain, and Cuthbert should be leading quiet, sane lives. Roland's obsession with Maerlyn's Grapefruit absorbs his mind and sucks away his hate. Meanwhile, his vigilante father has become the leader of a posse intent on revenge. Excitement heightens in this episode of the Dark Tower saga.

Meet the Author

Stephen King
Stephen King
Few authors have tapped into our secret fears as adeptly as Stephen King, Master of the Macabre and one of the most widely read novelists writing today. With his trademark blend of fantasy, horror, and psychological suspense, this prolific and immensely popular contemporary writer continues to remind us that evil is still a potent force in the world.

Biography

Fiction powerhouse Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine, in 1947. As a student at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, became active in political causes, and met his wife, the former Tabitha Spruce. In the early years of his marriage, King augmented his meager teacher's salary by selling short stories to men's magazines. Then, in 1973 he hit pay dirt: his novel Carrie was accepted for publication, and a major paperback deal provided the means for him to leave teaching and concentrate full-time on writing. Since then, the prolific author has never looked back.

Dubbed the Master of the Macabre for his domination of the horror genre, King has also written bestselling thrillers, mysteries, fantasies, novellas, and short stories, many of which have been turned into blockbuster films and miniseries (A partial list includes Carrie, The Shining, The Stand,, Misery, It, The Shawshank Redemption, The Langoliers, Stand by Me, and The Green Mile). He also has two works of nonfiction to his credit: a gorgeously crafted memoir/scribbler's how-to (On Writing) and Faithful, a chronicle of the Boston Red Sox' stellar 2004 season, cowritten with Stewart O'Nan. In 2003, he received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

In between books, the indefatigable King performs in the Rock Bottom Remainders, a rock band that includes among its rotating personnel fellow authors Dave Barry and Amy Tan; attends as many Boston Red Sox games as is humanly possible; and contributes with his wife, Tabitha, to many local and national charities.

Good To Know

Don't believe everything you read about Stephen King. Among the gossip circulating about the scribe is the rumor that he is going blind. King assures his fans that while he is genetically predisposed to a disease called macular degeneration, which could result in blindness, he is not actually going blind.

King is probably one of the most easily recognizable authors alive, and it's not just because of his string of bestsellers. King has appeared in a number of films based on his work, including Pet Semetary, Thinner, and The Stand.

If you've ever wondered why Stephen King has written several books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, there is actually a very simple explanation: King is so prolific that he felt it necessary to create an alter-ego so that he could publish more than one book a year. The name was a hastily hobbled together combination of writer Richard Stark (ironically, a pseudonym for Donald Westlake) and Randy Bachman of rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

    Great Add On

Book three of more to come of The Dark Tower series by Steven King in comic book drawings for grow ups. A different look and reading from the first three books of The Dark Tower the Gunslinger are in the early days of Roland and his KA.

    I Also Recommend:

Haunting rendition of King's Magnum Opus

The graphic novel is an independent art form. The rendition of Stephen King's Dark Tower series' into graphic art could have been a difficult feat, but as the original books already contained 'illuminations', the step to a graphic novel series was not such a big one. The drawings, the style and color, the whole atmosphere of the third part of this series ( as well as the first and second ) are unique and captivating, leaving you lingering on each page, perplexed. They reflect King's world wonderfully well, each page is a small painting, delightfully artful and attractive, but never too exuberant as to stifle the story. As a reader of the book series, I was wondering if the 'comic book version' could draw me in as well as the original. I must say it does so very well. Of course, to condense King's mammoths into a lot thinner volumes and a lot less text does diminish the sketching of the characters, but the authors succeed in creating personae that are equally enthralling. A job well done. And to those who don't want to work their way through thousands of pages of plain text, a good way of getting acquainted with Stephen King's gunslinger's ka-tet.

One of the series best books!

The Dark Tower series is definitely in good hands with theartists and writers of the graphic novel Dark Tower books. I havethe other two hardcover books and all of them are great reads for us GROWN UPS. The characters we love and the ones we love to hate are all here in fine form here. I hope there's more to come of the series and I'm waiting with fingers and toes crossed. It's been a long time since I've read more than one comic book or GRAPHIC NOVEL as they are known today, so when the master Stephen King gave the blessing for more Dark Tower stories, I eagerly awaited the books and I'm glad I did. BTW little kids shouldn't read these books because they will have nightmares for days about the Crimson King, just ask my niece lol!!

    "Treaachery" The Dark Tower...Big Time!!!!

As a die hard fan of Stepehen Kings Magnum Opus, Marvel Comics has made my day with taking King's masterpiece and turning it into the graphic novel. This is a dream come true as the reader really gets to get a visual concept of Kings characters and and an immagery of mid world like never before. Taking the story from the beginning of Rolands child hood from the point he becomes the gunslinger, ltimately gives Marvel the chance to explore an endless potential to grow the story line without deviating too much from the original work. I am anxiously awaiting the next hard back installment of the Dark Tower Graphin Novel Series and hopefull there will be a movie in the future.... Five stars, get it now....!!!

The potent combination of Robin Furth, Peter David, Jae Lee and Richard Isanove works wonders on the artform once again!

Once again pushing the boundaries of what has already been told, Robin Furth helps bring us another mostly untold chapter in the early life of that brooding, world-weary seeker, Roland of Gilead, THE Gunslinger. With masterful extrapolation that seamlessly fills in the rather prodigious gaps in Roland's young life, as well as the live's of his original Ka-Tet, Cuthbert Allgood and Alain Johns, Robin is joined once again by the masterful pencil and ink artist Jae Lee, who lovingly visually outlines the new perspective of a world long gone or yet to come that Robin has given us a glimpse of. In addition, Peter David's translations of ideas and concepts to the written word on paper feels as though the great scribe, King himself, were talking to you in the voice of this dark and majestic world he has created, and lent so lovingly to these fellow artists. And to polish off the visual treat aspect of the project, Richard Isanove has provided the perfect somber, mood enhancing palette of color that crystalizes the visualization in the mind and the eye. Beautiful to look at, a wonder to explore, enticing to read, I eagerly look forward to the next installment from these masters of the form.
