Trease and Evans' Pharmacognosy

( 1 )

Overview

This encyclopedic reference work on pharmacognosy covers the study of those natural substances, principally plants, that find a use in medicine. Its popularity and longevity stem from the book's balance between classical (crude and powdered drugs' characterization and examination) and modern (phytochemistry and pharmacology) aspects of this branch of science, as well as the editor's recognition in recent years of the growing importance of complementary medicines, including herbal, homeopathic and aromatherapy.

• No other book provides such a wealth of detail.
• A reservoir of knowledge in a field where there is a resurgence of interest - plants as a source of drugs are of growing interest both in complementary medicine fields and in the pharmaceutical industry in their search for new 'lead compounds'.
• Dr Evans has been associated with the book for over 20 years and is a recognised authority in all parts of the world where pharmacognosy is studied, his knowledge and grasp of the subject matter is unique.
• Meticulously referenced and kept up to date by the editor, new contributors brought in to cover new areas.

• New chapter on 'Neuroceuticals'.
• Addition of many new compounds recently added to British Pharmacopoeia as a result of European harmonisation.
• Considers development in legal control and standardisation of plant materials previously regarded as 'herbal medicines'.
• More on the study of safety and efficacy of Chinese and Asian drugs.
• Quality control issues updated in line with latest guidelines (BP 2007).

Discusses phytochemistry/pharmacopeial & related drugs of biological origin/pesticides of natural origin/etc.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Rahmat M Talukder, Ph.D.(Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy)
Description: This is an extensively revised, up-to-date pharmacognosy textbook. Relevant chemical structures and tables are used throughout to help readers better understand the topics.
Purpose: Pharmacognosy deals primarily with medicinal plants, an indispensable source for modern medicine, and up-to-date information on medicinal plants is always important for those who work with medicinal agents. This book has long served its objectives well, as does this edition.
Audience: Undoubtedly, this book is valuable not only to pharmacists, but also to other clinicians as well. Anyone who wants to learn pertinent information on pharmacognosy will find this an excellent source. Dr. Evans is well known in the field and the expert contributing authors have been selected from academia as well as from industry.
Features: This edition adds new chapters to reflect new drugs that have appeared since the previous edition. The chapter on quality and standardization of natural products is a valuable addition. Discussions of toxic plants, natural pesticides, and plants in contemporary and traditional medicine should be helpful not only to pharmacists but also to other healthcare professionals. Chapters on plant morphology, taxonomy, and phytochemistry are also comprehensive and well referenced. Photographs or drawings of commonly used medicinal plants would be helpful.
Assessment: This is a world-class textbook on pharmacognosy. Discussions of the plant and animal kingdoms as sources of drugs will help anyone to understand the significance of forest medicine in our modern life. This has been a textbook in many schools for undergraduate pharmacy students, but anyone interested in learning pharmacognosy or the roots of modern medicine will find this as an excellent and authentic source.

    Excellent

I found the book to be an excellent publication bringing together alot of the individual course work in our PhD Pharmacognosy program. It is well written and summarizes alot of information without going into alot of detail. One fault I have is the printing is a little on the small side which does make somewhat difficult reading for tired eyes!
