PreS-K-In the spirit of her Clap Your Hands (Putnam, 1992), Cauley brings together her colorfully clad group of human and animal friends who arrive at Bear's house for a treasure hunt. Bear has left a trail of clues written on slips of paper with distinctive checked borders. The animals and kids examine each clue, presented in rhymed couplets, which leads them from room to room and finally into the woods where their ursine friend is waiting with a surprise picnic. With hints from the text, very young listeners will search each page for the checked design that reveals the next bit of information. Cauley's paintings are her best yet, filled with joyful color, sunny details, and lively expressions. A surefire hit.-Ruth Semrau, formerly at Lovejoy School, Allen, TX

On the title and dedication pages, we see the friendly big bear who sets up all the clues for the treasure hunt and then waits with a picnic at the story's end. A winsome assortment of children and animals, dressed alike in children's play clothes, are the treasure hunters. A short rhyme on each page gives the location of a clue, with clues becoming progressively more difficult (though never too hard) to find. The fun is in observing the bear's house: the creature may be big, but he lives like a child. The book will work well in a small group, if children are able to sit close enough to see the clues.
