Editorial Reviews

Pirates, cryptic clues, sea storms and James Patterson are a combustible combination. This new illustrated adventure series starter proves that explosive point with a succession of fast-breaking scenes involving four resourceful siblings as they search for their missing treasure-hunting parents. These talented Kidds include a pair of 12-year-old twins (Rebecca "Beck" and Bickford "Bick"), and 14-year-old "Storm" and 17-year-old "Tailspin" Tommy. One exciting, jolly ocean jaunt.

Patterson and Grabenstein (I Funny) launch another middle-grade series with a tongue-in-cheek tale about four siblings who follow in their treasure-hunting father’s footsteps after he goes missing at sea. Told from the viewpoint of 12-year-old Bick and augmented by drawings by his twin sister, Beck, the story follows the Kidd children, which also include super-smart Storm and girl-crazy Tommy, as they set out to fulfill their father’s final mission: to hunt down a missing artifact and find the treasure that might help them rescue their kidnapped mother. They also contend with pirates, killer surfers, unsavory middlemen, and a rival treasure hunter, adventures that Neufeld masterfully captures with humor and energy in b&w illustrations that have something of a Robert Neubecker vibe. Though generally lighthearted, a frenetic sense of excitement and adventure permeates this nautical escapade, which features over-the-top situations and characters, and plenty of intrigue. There’s little time to breathe as the Kidds pinball from one spot of trouble to the next, making for a fun and fast-paced ride. Ages 8–12. Agent: Robert Barnett, Williams & Connolly. Illustrator’s agent: Shannon Associates. (Sept.)

Twelve-year-old Bick Kidd and his family live on the high seas in a ship called The Lost. They sail around the world discovering amazing treasure, which they cleverly hid aboard their ship. All seems ideal until the perfect storm rips the waters and takes Bick’s dad with it. Now Bick, his twin sister, his other sister, and his brother must figure out what happened to their dad and find a way to rescue their mom. Could it be both are dead and these children have been orphaned at sea? Maybe the clues left around the ship will help them to solve this mystery? The delightful characters bring vitality to this creative, twisting plot of espionage and treasure hunting. Each layer exposes another layer until the reader discovers that nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted. This book reminds me of a modern Treasure Island. The disappearance of their parents inspires four children to take over the family business: treasure hunting. Raised on board a ship and schooled in sailing, navigation, scuba and karate, Tommy, Storm, Bick and Beck are no strangers to adventure. When their father, professor Tom Kidd, is washed overboard in a storm, it is up to the four young fortune hunters to follow the clues and try to rescue their missing mother. But it is hard to know whom to trust when your allies are shady black-market dealers and spies and your enemies are ruthless pirates and dangerous surfer dudes. Luckily, the Kidd kids' assets include Storm's photographic memory, Tommy's calm disposition, Beck's hard-nosed negotiation skills and narrator Bick's optimism. But even the most sea-hearty adventurers might flounder when facing the Pirate King. Wacky hijinks, a can't-miss setting and quirky characters keep this breezy story afloat. A fast-moving plot, copious illustrations and short chapters will encourage even reluctant readers to test the waters. This new series promises it all: ruthless pirates, CIA spies, terrorists, stolen works of art and priceless treasure. More important, it delivers. A high-seas adventure that will entice even the most confirmed of landlubbers. (Adventure. 8-12)

Amazing book for kids. It blows my mind at how he can go from one writing style to the next with such fluency. Still my favorite writer.

My son, 9 years old, loved this book. He was never bored with the book and was excited about reading more every night. I recommend this book and can not wait for the next one.

I am reading this book every night to my 6 year old son. This is the first big book that he has gotten into. The illustrations help keep his interest in the story. He is excited for bedtime, and for me to read the book to him (he won't let his mom read it to him), and for him to help me read it. Overall a great read.

This was an awsome quick read for me. I bought it for my older son and just happened to start reading the book while I was waiting on his dad. Needless to say he now has his nose stuck in it. I love being able to share an author with my teenage son. I have yet to read a book by Mr. Patterson that I didn't love. Can't wait for book two :D
