Treasure Planet [Original Score]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Beth Amos
The soundtrack to Disney's animated movie Treasure Planet is a gem in its own right. This space-age tale, which is loosely based on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, follows 15-year-old Jim Hawkins as he travels to a parallel universe in pursuit of an incomparable treasure. In the course of his journey, Jim encounters black holes, space storms, and a stunning betrayal that forces him to grow up fast. John Rzeznik, the lead singer of punk-pop hit makers the Goo Goo Dolls, wrote and sings two of the songs on the album. "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)" is a moving portrayal of Jim's angst and forced coming-of-age, while "Always Know Where You Are" teams Rzeznik up with ...

The soundtrack to Disney's animated movie Treasure Planet is a gem in its own right. In the course of his journey, Jim encounters black holes, space storms, and a stunning betrayal that forces him to grow up fast. John Rzeznik, the lead singer of punk-pop hit makers the Goo Goo Dolls, wrote and sings two of the songs on the album. "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)" is a moving portrayal of Jim's angst and forced coming-of-age, while "Always Know Where You Are" teams Rzeznik up with the British pop group BBMak for a rocking collaboration. The remaining 15 tracks on the album contain the film's soaring score, composed by Oscar- and Emmy-winning composer James Newton Howard (The Prince of Tides, The Fugitive, E.R.). Howard's pieces are alternately reflective and heart-pounding, echoing Jim's outer-space travels and internal journeys. The composer's stirring orchestral arrangements perfectly capture all the wonder, danger, and excitement of this sci-fi adventure.
All Music Guide - Jason Ankeny
James Newton Howard's third Disney animated score is a solid if predictable effort in the composer's signature larger-than-life orchestral vein. Like the previous Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet is pure Disney formula, balancing rousing action, cornball comedy, and bittersweet romance in bold, broad strokes. What sets it apart from its predecessor is the presence of Gaelic whistles and fiddles, as well as a fiery electric guitar that adds a dash of rock & roll to Howard's otherwise conventional symphonic sensibilities. The problem with Treasure Planet is the problem that plagues all contemporary Disney scores, and that's the mind-numbing predictability of the music's emotional arc: if you've heard one of these, you've heard 'em all. Banal pop tunes from Goo Goo Dolls frontman Johnny Rzeznik and BBMak merely compound the facelessness.

    Pretty good!

Right after i saw the movie i begged my mom to let me buy the CD. She gave in and i ended up getting it. I listened to it and man.... i loved it. Its a really good CD, i enjoyed it, but there was a little too many scores. I'd like to hear John Rzeznik sing a few more songs, but besides that, its great.
