Library Journal
Writers (and serious shoppers) Ron and Caryl Krannich pull no punches in this latest installment of Impact's shopping series. Disregard the first part of the subtitle: this is not primarily a travel book on Mexico-it is about shopping in our neighbor to the south. Holding that there are plenty of existing travel guides on Mexico, the Krannichs, both former university professors and the authors of Shopping in Exotic Places, do furnish helpful suggestions on hotels, restaurants, and sites-but only in reference to retail therapy: one must be well rested and fed, and sites are for when one is shopped out. The text is divided into two sections: "Smart Travel Shopping" and "Great Destinations." The former presents solid tips on getting the most value out of one's shopping and time. The latter covers Mexico City, Taxco, Acapulco, Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Michoacan, Queretaro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Puebla, and Oaxaca. Aside from the overuse of the terms kitsch and lifestyle shopping (whatever that is), this is a highly useful guide for the well-heeled. Recommended for large public libraries.-Lee Arnold, Historical Soc. of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
