Best friends and neighbors, Annie May Weightman and Violet Cobble, live in Oklahoma where their families are trying to stay afloat during the Great Depression. Annie enjoys spending her time searching through all the dust in order to find some small traces of her past; while Violet constantly plays make believe so she can escape from the dusty land. Annie¿s family, who manages to hang onto many of their cows and chickens, is one of the few families who were considered to be lucky during the great depression. Violet¿s family, on the other hand is desperate. When Violet¿s ninety year old aunt dies her family finally decides to pursue a new life in California. The girls are forced to separate when Violet¿s family moves, but they are able to keep in touch through letters. It doesn¿t take long for the girls to realize how important friends are during times of hardship. They have to learn to lean on each other for the support they need to help keep their families afloat. Author, Tracey Porter, joins together these two voices to tell a story of American hopes and dreams, during a time when thousands fled their homes in search of work, food, and shelter. Annie and Violet's story portrays the friendship and the courage it takes to get through times of hardship. Porter¿s novel provides young readers with two role models they can relate to and believe in.
Treasures in the Dust is about two young girls telling their life stories during the Great Depression era. These two eleven year old girls, Annie and Violet, who are working really hard just to keep the family going. In this story many of their neighbors have left in search for a better life. That then happens to Violet and her family they are going to have to leave their home to get money to pay the bank. Tracy Porter really captures one¿s eye when she is describing the girl¿s features she makes Annie as wanting to be an archaeologist and her best friend wanting to become a dancer in Hollywood. Violet has a really creative imagination, as for Annie loves to study the past by searching in the dusty ground for different arrows that belonged to Indians. Annie¿s and Violet¿s way of explaining their stories really makes the book exciting. Porter¿s way of writing the book is such an amazing way of thinking. Their stories are told by each girl on every chapter. It is made like a diary of them. I found it a really great story. Treasures in the Dust makes it possible to feel like a real story that will capture your heart if you really get into it. To be honest, this is the second best book that I have read I was very pleased with it. Read to believe! Treasures in the Dust by Tracey Porter
Treasures in the Dust is a book about two best freinds Annie and Violet who live through the hard times of the Depression and the Dust Bowl. My favorite part is when Violet helps with the birth of a baby calf that does not go so well.
Violet Cobble and Annie May Weightman are best friends living in Oklahoma during the Great Depression. Annie's family has enough money to stay in Oklahoma, but Violet's is on the verge of leaving their home to go to California. While Violet and her family are serching for jobs, Annie writes to them and Violet writes back. I like this book because you never know what is going to happen.
