Overview

Treasures of the Incas presents a vivid and richly illustrated portrait of the rise and fall of the various coastal and mountain peoples of the region, and the magnificent design and craftsmanship they have bequeathed to posterity.

Overview

Treasures of the Incas presents a vivid and richly illustrated portrait of the rise and fall of the various coastal and mountain peoples of the region, and the magnificent design and craftsmanship they have bequeathed to posterity.

Despite the destruction wrought by European colonizers greedy for the native treasure, enough artifacts have survived to testify to the Andean peoples’ great skill and imaginative sophistication—from exquisitely detailed textiles and ceramics, to monumental architecture and intricate metalwork. In particular the gold and silver artistry of the pre-Columbian Ades are outstanding.

A popular hymn of the Incas declared that “The sun rains gold, the moon rains silver”—reflecting South American belief in a powerful body of elemental myths on which the art provides a dramatic visual commentary.

Tracing such connections between symbolism and belief, art and myth, Treasures of the Incas sets the riches of South America in their historical and regional context and restores an important missing piece of the jigsaw of the world’s greatest civilizations.
