Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
A collection of traditional and original stories and poems by such authors as Aesop and Lewis Carroll. The book also contains excerpts from The Wind in the Willows and Peter Pan. There are more than 200 full color paintings in the book's 300 pages.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3-- A collection of fables, folk tales, and poems, as well as excerpts from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland , Pinocchio , The Wind in the Willows , The Nutcracker , and Peter Pan . Paintings by 16 different artists accompany the selections. Much of the art is highly reminiscent of the romantic works of 19th-century illustrators; some paintings actually have the same palette, arrangement of figures, and characters found in earlier artistic interpretations of these stories. Unlike Edens's The Three Princesses Bantam, 1991 and The Glorious Mother Goose Atheneum, 1988, which include early illustrative renderings of these works, this book holds little historical interest. It seems to be designed for home collections rather than for libraries, which will have all of these selections in many other sources. --Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, Laramie
From Barnes & Noble
Includes favorite stories, from "The 3 Little Pigs" & "Little Red Riding Hood" to Peter Pan, plus fairy tales from Hans Christian Andersen & the Brothers Grimm, Aesop's fables, Mother Goose rhymes, classic poems, more. 8" x 10". Color illus. All ages

    Great renditions of the classics

I bought the book quickly, without having a chance to read a review, or even thumb through it, hoping that this version of the stories would contain the necessary depth to help my children encounter the fullness of their own being, both light and dark. And I've been wonderfully surprised! The retellings are beautifully written by Sheila Black, easy to comprehend, but without condescension, and without saccahrine. The full depth of the tales comes through, with magic, mystery, joy, and heartache - and my two boys (6 and 3) have been mesmerized for many weeks now, as we work our way through the stories. The vibrant illustrations have also made them eager to dive into each story as the pages flip by.

Finally, an all inclusive children's book with all the stories the parents will remember!

I had been looking in the local public library for another book (aside from all the books we have at home) to start exposing my three-year-old daughter to some of the stories that I recall when I was a child, and what I consider the classics (Snow White, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Jack and the Bean Stalk, etc.). I thought I was only going to be able to get one book at a time for each of these stories as I searched. Then, one last look before I left the library, I pulled this book off the shelf, and to my amazement, it had many, many of the stories I was searching for. I was thrilled. Then, more to my amazement and glee, the stories read well, and even though the pictures are of the 'olden days' quality (almost for adults), my daughter had no problem picking out even minute details, like little wall lamps and a pillow on a chair, as well as the actual figures depicted. I was thrilled, once again. The only thing I would caution people about is some of the stories may not be as you completely recall, there seems to be some embellishments that I never remember hearing, however, it actually adds to the stories and does not detract, so, thankfully, it is a wonderful book that I am ecstatic I, literally, stumbled upon. I love it so much that I am purchasing it for my daughter to add to her library. Enjoy it...even the adults will love it.

The child within you will surface and the child beside you will glow!

My first attraction to this wonderful book was the beautifully designed cover illustrated by one of my favorite artists by the name of Scott Gustofson, who is featured throughout the inside of this handsome treasure along with sixteen other terrific artists who¿s paintings flow through the pages of this masterpiece that will continue be a part of a child¿s life forever. All of the unforgettable nursery rhymes, poems and stories we all know so well where chosen with great thought which created this special collection of art and literature. Small hands will be eager to turn all 303 pages as the stories are told while enjoying the brilliant artwork that perfectly accompany each treasured tale. Remember ¿Hansel & Gretel,¿ remember ¿Rumpelstiltskin¿ and don¿t forget ¿The Frog Prince.¿ These are just a few of the favorite stories attached to the pages that will spark the mind of a child and bring back wonderful memories of the old but young at heart. This one will attract the attention of all ages and be passed around for generations to come. This wonderfully mastered book of beautiful artwork and classic storytelling is not to be left off anybody¿s book self that enjoys a great fable mingled with fantastically illustrated paintings. When this book touches your hands, the child within you will surface and the child beside you will glow. A ¿Treasury¿ of Children¿s Literature is a well-deserved title. Enjoy!

This book is very beautiful. The illustrations merely bring out the fantastic text! Besides fairy tales, this book contains much more literature, including The Night Before Christmas, Aesop's Fables, A Child's Garden of Verses, and excerpts from classic children books including Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, and The Wind in the Willows. If you're thinking of buying an exclusive book for your children, make this one of your top 3!!

My Favorite Book from my Childhood

This book is a wonderful collection of children's favorite stories. My mother read it to me as a child, and I plan to read it to mine when I start a family. It is the best book of classic tales I've ever read and every now and then, I go back and read a few of my favorites.
