Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
There are twenty little stories here from original selections by Joan Aiken, Margaret Mahy, Dick King-Smith, and Anne Fine to retellings of familiar works such as "Rip Van Winkle," "Brer Rabbit," "Stone Soup," and the "Town Mouse and the Country Mouse." It is worth noting that Krasilovsky's "The Man Who Didn't Wash His Dishes" still is fresh and funny after all these years. On a whole the collection is uneven. Some of the original stories seem forced and the writing glib and pedestrian. The retellings make up for this deficiency with Julius Lester's mastery of language in "Brer Rabbit" and the "Stone Soup" variant is told with a hint of broad Irish brogue. In all fairness and with flaws aside, these stories could still be useful to a storyteller (who could adapt and embellish) or a classroom teacher needing a filler for a lesson or an end of the day story. Part of a larger series from the Kingfisher "Treasury." 2000, Kingfisher, Ages 6 to 10, $7.95. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey—Children's Literature
