Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
This selection offers an overview of the words of Shakespeare. It does not concentrate on plot and so does not give the reader a satisfying sense of story, but it is not meant to. The emphasis is on poetry and the amazing scope of Shakespeare's verse as well as his timeless insight and knowledge of human nature and all its foibles. The selections are contained within chapters based upon theme and there are also quotations, which serve as headings on every page. The reader is urged to read aloud, since the words of Shakespeare were written to be spoken rather than read. Excerpts read aloud by a parent or teacher would offer an introduction to Shakespeare for many children. However, there are those youngsters who love to read, who find a joy in words and clever phrases, who want the challenge of puzzling over the meanings and who may be content at times to revel in the beauty of language expressing thoughts, which at the immediate moment, may be beyond their grasp. Such young readers will doubtless find satisfaction in pouring over this volume on their own. 2000 (orig. 1995), Kingfisher, Ages 10 up, $11.95. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford
