Features: Since the last edition of this book, there have been advances in our understanding of the biology of depression as well newer treatment options. This new edition captures these advances. Starting with an introduction covering the growing prevalence of depression, the authors cover nicely the principles of management of depression. The importance of psychotherapy is described, along with the different types commonly used. "Evidence based antidepressant selection across depressive disorders" details the guidelines based on level of evidence and criteria for therapeutic choices. Treatment options for the various subtypes of depression are presented based on evidence and clinical experience. The practical issues of treatment, sequential therapies, and treatment of resistant depression are discussed with strategies of switching and combination therapies. An overview of alternative therapies, such as light, sleep deprivation, and neuromodulation are also covered. Differences in depressive disorders in the elderly, children, and women are highlighted.
