Overview

This cutting-edge book brings advances in genetics, neurobiology, and psychopharmacology to the clinic to enhance treatment for neurodevelopmental disorders. Significant progress has been made in identifying the neurobiological mechanisms of several disorders and targeted treatments are modifying the outcome of these disorders. However, the ability to utilize this knowledge has not been summarized in one place for the practicing clinician. This book will fill that gap by providing the theoretical underpinnings and the latest advances in targeted treatments. Several neurodevelopmental disorders are reviewed in detail including clinical features and behavioral phenotypes, standard treatments and new targeted treatments based on the latest advances in neurobiology and the animal model studies that have lead to new treatments. The disorders covered include psychiatric disorders: schizophrenia, depression, autism and ADHD; single gene disorders including Tuberous Sclerosis, Fragile X Syndrome and fragile X- associated disorders, Angelman Syndrome, PKU, and Muscular Dystrophies; and complex genetic disorders such as Down syndrome. This book also highlights the commonalities across disorders and new genetic and molecular concepts in an easy to read format. This is a very exciting time for new targeted treatments and this volume is a landmark treatise on this new age of treatment.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Every clinician who cares for children and adolescents has some patients with the neurodevelopmental problems described here. This book provides an excellent overview of the neuroscientific research that guides the evaluation and treatment of these disorders as well as in-depth information on each one. Treatment of Neurodevelopmental Disorders should be in the reference library of every clinician who evaluates and treats children." --Catherine DeAngelis, MD, MPH, University Distinguished Service Professor and Professor of Pediatrics, Emerita, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; Editor-in-Chief Emerita, JAMA

"This book unequivocally demonstrates there is new hope for targeted medical treatments for children with known neurodevelopmental disorders. It reviews recent breakthroughs and explains the underlying neurobiology. It fills an important gap by specifying the most recent advances in treatment and their translation to the clinic. I highly recommend it as an invaluable resource for physicians, educators, and members of all disciplines involved in providing care for children with neurodevelopmental disorders and their families." --James C. Harris, MD, Director of Developmental Neuropsychiatry and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Mental Health and Pediatrics, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

"This is a well-done summary of current research into the treatments for numerous neurodevelopmental disorders. It is important reading for clinicians who treat children with these disorders." -- Doody's Health Sciences Book Review

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Amy Corcoran, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: Neurodevelopmental disorders are a group of diagnoses that traditionally included single gene dysfunction with childhood presentations. This term is being expanded to include common psychiatric diagnoses that present across the lifespan as molecular mechanisms are better understood. These disorders can be difficult to treat given that so much is still unknown. Research is constantly being published but results may not be widely known, limiting the efficacy and consistency of providers. As more and more is discovered, it is increasingly important that clinicians be able to incorporate new evidence into their understanding and treatment.
Purpose: The editors intend to provide "the theoretical underpinnings of the neurodevelopmental model and then describe the disorders where this model can be used to guide evaluation and treatment." They hope the book, "by translating recent research for a broad audience, provides a road map" for future researchers as well as clinicians and affected families.
Audience: The stated audience is clinicians treating these patients, including pediatricians, geneticists, neurologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, primary care physicians, educators, and allied therapists.
Features: The book covers single gene disorders such as fragile X syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, Rett syndrome, RASopathies, Angelman syndrome, muscular dystrophies, and phenylketonuria as well as complex genetic disorders like Down syndrome, schizophrenia, ADHD, depression, and autism spectrum disorders. Each chapter includes a brief overview of the disorder, the DSM diagnostic criteria, neurobiological abnormalities, epigenetics, diagnostic methods, related disorders, and current treatments. There is also a discussion of experimental treatments in animal models and clinical trials.
Assessment: This is a well-done summary of current research into the treatments for numerous neurodevelopmental disorders. It is important reading for clinicians who treat children with these disorders.

Meet the Author

Dr. Randi Hagerman is an expert in the treatment in neurodevelopmental disorders with expertise in targeted treatments that reverse the neurobiological abnormalities associated with a specific disorder. This new age of targeted treatments has led to new interventions which are changing the trajectories of development for many of these children.

Dr. Robert Hendren is a psychiatrist who focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders including autism. His research has spanned a variety of illnesses, from autism, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder to eating and impulse control disorders. In 2001 he became director of the MIND Institute at the University of California, Davis, where he developed a strong clinical trials program that has tested many new treatments for autism. Since 2009 as director of child and adolescent psychiatry at UCSF, Dr. Hendren has conducted many clinical studies, including an innovative trial to determine if there is a genomic profile that can predict the response of autistic children to the drug risperdone. He is also gauging the biological effects of alternative treatments such as vitamin B12, vitamin D, Omega-3s and hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) on individuals with autism.
