Overview

A complete, hands-on resource, this volume provides everything the mental health professional needs for working with clients who suffer from obsessions and compulsions. The initial chapters supply the background by describing in detail the most up-to-date, clinically relevant information available on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The latter chapters comprise a step-by-step guide for conducting behavioral treatment. The book also features unusually practical appendices that include checklists, an inventory, rating scales, and suggested readings.

This book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is designed to be a guide for the clinician who is engaged in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The book is written succinctly, yet is comprehensive in its coverage. The underpinnings as well as the development of behavioral treatment for OCD are described and a summary of the literature pertaining to the nature of OCD and its treatment is provided. This volume should prove particularly educational and instructive for those who are non-behaviorally trained and those who are not expert in the psychopathology of OCD.

"Because of its comprehensive nature, this volume will serve well as a handy reference for all clinicians involved in the treatment of OCD. However, it will be particularly useful for those who are less experienced. Steketee went to great length to discuss the nuances of assessment and treatment of OCD, liberally spicing the text with illustrative examples of the syndrome and providing insight into how to conduct a behavioral assessment and how to make behavioral treatment work. Also of particular value to clinicians is the discussion of problems encountered during the course of treatment and factors that militate against a positive outcome. Overall, Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder will be a valuable asset to clinicians treating OCD and will serve to help disseminate to a wider audience the intricacies of one of behavior therapies' most successful treatment stories." --Sam Turner, Ph.D., Medical University of South Carolina

"Dr. Steketee, one of our country's most experienced research and clinical behavioral therapists, has written an impressive and very readable book that fills a gap in the medical literature. Clinicians frequently ask what they can read to get a basic understanding of the behavioral techniques that have been successfully used to treat patients with OCD. Until this book, there was not a comprehensive source.

"Dr. Steketee has organized a complex body of information that is not taught in most psychiatric residencies into a very readable and easily understood form. After reading her book, the clinician will be armed with powerful new techniques that will allow for more effective treatment of OCD patients." --Michael A. Jenike, M.D. Associate Chief of Psychiatry for Research, Massachusetts General Hospital

"This book provides an up-to-date, comprehensive summary of the research into obsessive-compulsive disorder. In addition to a scholarly and clinically astute review of research into the phenomenology, etiology, and behavioral and psychopharmacological treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder, the book provides a detailed guide to the assessment and treatment of this disorder. Steketee details specific clinical interventions and discusses the problems that may occur during therapy based on years of combined clinical and research experience. Researchers will find much of value in this book, and it is highly recommended for practitioners of all theoretical persuasions." --Paul M.G. Emmelkamp, Ph.D.

"Dr. Steketee, a widely recognized authority on this subject, has developed an instructional guide that can be readily utilized by practitioners with all levels of treatment sophistication. As OCD remains one of the most complex and challenging disorders in psychiatry, still often misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated, this book brings new hope that sufferers with this disorder can be afforded a higher quality of care in more clinical settings (not exlusively the OCD specialty clinics...This text is a judicious blend of conceptual models and treatment pragmatics. It is structured in such a way that clinicians of all levels of expertise can benefit from reading it. We heartily recommend it as an invaluable resource book for any practitioner's professional library." --M. Lynn Buttolph, M.D., Ph.D. and Nancy J. Keuthen, Ph.D. in General Hospital Psychiatry

"...it serves as a valuable reference for both the clinician and the researcher." --Pallavi Nishith, Ph.D. Department of Psychology, University of Missouri, St. Louis

Steketee Is One of the Greats in the Field of OCD

This is one of those books that anyone who works in the field should own. I would make a further suggestion. Going to the website for the OC Foundation, check on their annual national meeting, and go hear Gail Steketee personally. She is a frequent presenter.
