"This is one of my favorite dermatology books IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. Avoid finding yourself stumped on what to do next for the challenging patient with whom "you have tried everything." Your next step should be this book. There is a code that you can use to access the reference online. I am unaware of any comparable reference."-Patricia Wong, MD(Stanford University Medical Center) Doody Review: 5 stars Treatment of Skin Disease, 4th edition Lebwohl M, Heymann W, Berth-Jones J and Coulson I

As a self-confessed bibliophile, I have many books - some I have not even opened but just enjoy having while others are real workhorses hat I use most days. Treatment of Skin Disease is firmly in the second category. I have bought every edition and used each one almost every day in the clinic. Its simple layout makes it easy to find what you are looking for. In each chapter there is a consistent format of: a brief synopsis (which I usually ignore); a suggested management strategy; and specific investigations followed by therapies, which are divided into first-line, second-line and third-line.

Often, I glance at the headings to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything. The brief summaries of the papers are particularly useful. I only retain an overall impression once I have read a paper; however, there are times when it is useful to appear better informed and this book gives me the edge. I can quickly swot up and appear better informed than is perhaps justified. This is particularly useful when we have trainees or competitive colleagues in the clinic!

It was useful this morning to be able to quote that, in a study of 42 patients, methotrexate produced a 42% reduction in the severity score for atopic dermatitis, compared with 39% for azathioprine. If only I could remember such things! Of course, some of the investigations and treatments are a little unrealistic - for example, video dermoscopy for lichen planopilaris - but even the very thought of it adds to the enjoyment of reading about options when faced with some therapeutically challenging problems.

It has also saved me hours of work when challenged by the hospital pharmacy to justify some off-formulary therapy. I usually just refer to the relevant section and send them a copy, along with the reference. Of course, I could do a literature search, but there are only a limited number of hours in the day.

It is a book I keep in my clinic, along with Bolognia’s Dermatology and a drug rash book. I would feel vulnerable without them. Of course, by using the web version (you get free access with the book), you can access it easily at the clinic, but I prefer the hard copy myself.Reviewed by: Neill Hepburn MD FRCP Consultant Dermatologist, Lincoln County Hospital Date: 2014

"Without doubt this is an excellent book and the reader is encouraged to dip in and read around a topic and enhance their knowledge. It is also a super reference book, particulary when wanting more information about dermatological therapeutics - an area that is often neglected.

Of course as expected in a classy dermatology book, the production values are superb with plenty of pretty pictures - in colour of course.

All in all, this is a top class dermatology book and is ideal to quickly look up and read what is the best theraphy or range of treatments for a given condition."

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Private Practice)
Description: I love, love, love this book. It includes therapeutic options for just about every dermatosis. Disease entities are alphabetically arranged for easy access. There is a brief but well-written discussion of presentation and pathophysiology followed by management strategies. Current references are included for each proposed treatment. The book is updated every four years, and I have all four editions — the editors continue to improve and expand each edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a knowledgeable and dependable reference for treating skin diseases. First, second, and third-line treatments are summarized and categorized in each chapter. The authors also grade the proposed treatment based on an evidence-based rating system (double blinded study, controlled study, number of participants in the study, anecdotal only).
Audience: This is an advanced therapeutic reference for clinical dermatologists.
Features: This is a wonderful and invaluable resource that all experienced clinical dermatologists should have in their medical library. It provides insightful clinical tips regarding how to effectively prescribe medications and for whom they may be most efficacious. There is ample room at the end of each chapter for one to add additional notes. Every chapter has a color clinical photograph representative of the condition under discussion and includes recommendations about appropriate laboratory tests.
Assessment: This is one of my favorite dermatology books IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. Avoid finding yourself stumped on what to do next for the challenging patient with whom "you have tried everything." Your next step should be this book. There is a code that you can use to access the reference online. I am unaware of any comparable reference.
