About the Author:

May Theilgaard Watts is the author of several popular field guides, many scholarly articles, and the natural history classic, Reading the Landscape of America. She started the movement to establish the first major rail-to-trails conversion, the Illinois Prairie Path, and was a well-known naturalist, writer, and activist in the Midwest.

    all around fun book

    This book is perfect if you wish to take a walk in the woods and have always wondered, what kind of tree is that? It was recommended to us when we walked along a tree seminar with a park ranger in Cambridge, MA.

    If you can have only one book, it's Tree Finder

    Tree Finder is intended for the novice to moderate level tree finder. It is small and easy to carry in a backpack or even a fannypack. There is a key to use, and it is fantastic for grownups and children

    so easy to use

    This is the easiest tree finder book that I know of. The pictures are very clear and the process of elimination is easy to understand. This is the book that led to my love of trees. I highly recommend it. Oh, and did I mention how the small size makes it extremely portable on your next hiking trek?!

    Decent format, not enough species

    This book is ok. It's size is great for a backpack but it lacks enough species to make an accurate identification. If all you are looking for is to identify a tree to the family, this will work decently but if you really want to know what you are looking at I reccomend Peterson's guide to trees and shrubs.
