Children's Literature - Children's Literature
In double-page spreads, ten historic treks are pictured and described. The adventures include Vikings coming to America, crusaders, medieval pilgrimages, Magellan sailing around the world, and covered wagons heading west. The text is simple and brief at three paragraphs. Each journey features a sidebar listing travelers. Similar to a Where's Waldo? puzzle, the reader locates those travelers in the picture. Finding a sneezing elephant in the illustration of Hannibal crossing the Alps may have little to do with comprehending the nature of this journey, but it appeals to young readers and may attract potential history students. The final chapter identifies select forms of transportation through the centuries. A great deal of civilization is covered in this book, from 1200 B.C. to 1945, but the treatment is light and entertaining. 1999, The Millbrook Press, Ages 8 to 12, $21.40. Reviewer: Jacki Vawter
