Then she finds a teenage boy bleeding on her front porch. Before collapsing, he tells her his name is Lucas, he’s a Were, and Bryn’s protection is his only hope.

But Lucas isn’t part of Bryn’s pack, and she has no right to claim another alpha’s Were.  With threats—old and new—looming, and danger closing in from all sides, Bryn will have to accept what her guardian Callum knew all along. To be alpha, she will have to give in to her own animal instincts and become less human. And, she’s going to have to do it alone.

Bryn faces both the costs, and the rewards, of love and loyalty, in this thrilling sequel to Raised by Wolves.

Editorial Reviews

ALAN Review - Melanie Hundley
Bryn, the human Alpha of a pack of werewolves, is settling into her position as leader. She knows that she doesn't fully understand werewolf politics and rules, but she does the best she can to figure out how to keep her pack together and safe. Pack safety is challenged with the arrival of a teenage werewolf named Lucas. He shows up on Bryn's front porch, bleeding and injured, and wants Bryn's protection. Is Lucas who he says he is? Does he have an ulterior motive for coming to Bryn's pack? Bryn has to choose between the safety of her pack and her humanity. She will have to face and fight her greatest challenge alone. Bryn, a strong, female, human Alpha, challenges the expectations of were society, and this novel challenges the expectations of the current vein of werewolf novels. Reviewer: Melanie Hundley

It hardly seems possible but this book is even more exciting than the first.

**This review (and the book itself) contains MAJOR spoilers for Raised by Wolves. You have been warned.**

Brynn thought spending the first fifteen years of her life living with the werewolves of the Stone River Pack was hard. Turns out being the alpha of her own pack is even harder.

Brynn is still human, she is still a teenager. But she is also the alpha of the Cedar Ridge pack meaning she is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of an entire pack of werewolves--living day to day with Were who could just as easily kill her as choose to let her lead them.

Worse, being alpha means dealing with the other packs and their--ruthless, older, male--alphas who would mostly want nothing more than to see Brynn dealt with and her pack absorbed into their own. Callum, her former mentor, might want something else but with a Were like Callum it's impossible to know for sure.

When a battered teenage boy appears in the center of Cedar Ridge territory asking for protection things get even more complicated. Brynn can't claim another alpha's wolf without starting a war. She can't send the boy away to let him die. Strange dreams of fire and other threats start appearing everywhere.

No one said being alpha would be easy. No one said how long Brynn would last as alpha either in Trial by Fire (2011) by Jennifer Lynne Barnes.

Trial by Fire is the sequel to Barnes' powerhouse novel Raised by Wolves.

Trial by Fire is a great sequel. Barnes capitalizes on the unique world she created in Raised by Wolves while continuing to develop the world of the North American packs and some other supernatural beings to great effect.

All of the characters readers will want to see from the first book are here with further character development and expanded histories, particularly Lake and Devon. Chase, by comparison, still has a lot of question marks about his past and his general character but that is, at least, explained more in this installment.

It hardly seems possible but this book is even more exciting than the first. Brynn is facing challenges from all sides with very few options for help. With danger looming from all sides, Trial by Fire is a definite nail-biter that will draw readers in with action, adventure and even more twists than the first novel in the series. Not to mention a dynamite ending that will leave readers clamoring for a new installment about Brynn and the Cedar Ridge pack.

Possible Pairings: White Cat by Holly Black, I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You by Ally Carter, City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, Clarity by Kim Harrington, Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins, The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan, Divergent by Veronica Roth

Gold Star Award Winner! Bryn loves her new life with her pack - until a wolf enters her territory. He's badly hurt and he's asking for protection. With Shay as his Alpha, he's been used as a punching bag, until Shay gave him to a group of psychics. Bryn doesn't know what to do. She doesn't want to turn him away, but neither can she help him within the rules of the werewolves. She desperately tries to find a loophole in the rules. Before she can figure out a solution, the psychics show up in town. A new girl starts at school, and Bryn knows she's a threat. Caroline isn't normal, she's a hunter. She can't be tracked and she never misses a target. She has the ability to take out Bryn's entire pack. The psychics hate werewolves. Each time Bryn meets them, she learns more about them. With the psychics and Shay looking for a fight, Bryn needs to watch her back very carefully. She knows what's at stake, and she's not about to give in or give up her pack for anything. I couldn't wait to read this book as I *loved* RAISED BY WOLVES! TRIAL BY FIRE was simply amazing. I loved the power of Bryn, and how her pack's different and how she as a human is different from the other Alphas. I love how she tries to see the loopholes in dangerous situations. I love how she doesn't ever want to play by the rules, and her sense of justice. Mostly, there isn't anything I don't love about Bryn. I love Lake, Chase, and Dev, too. With this one, I laughed, I cried, and I had to re-read the ending twice to understand it. The ending absolutely blew me away - I'm already looking forward to the third book in the series!

I thought this book was really great! But the thing that gets me

I thought this book was really great! But the thing that gets me is that the girl on the cover looks so much like me its crazy! I had so many people point this book out to me because of the girl on this cover and the other books in this series.

    Best book ever!

Okay, usually if I read a good book I'll say "Well that was kinda good. I guess it could have been better. I have read worse though." But this book it just AMAZING. I am not giving away anything about what will happen in this book, but at the end I cried. I honestly cried becauae I could feel the actual emotion Jennifer Lynn was trying to portray in the story. I think this is a great book. At first I thought it was just going to be some stupid werewolf version of Twilight or something, but I wad completely wrong. This is one of my favorite books I've ever read. I give it a five star review and I really hope Jennifer makes a sequel to this book too. I was thinking it could be one where Bryn and Chase get married or something like that. I don't carw what the sequel is about, just make another one Jennifer! You are an amazing wriyer and I hope toread another one of your books!

    Great sequel!

This was an awesome read. Bryn is such a wonderful character, she has so much to deal with and she does it without the "normal" whining. She is a strong, loving Alpha. If you loved the first book you have to read this one also. Hoping there is a third one coming out soon!

A Great Continuation of the Series

I was excited when I found out there was a sequel to the "Raised by Wolves" book I read when it first came out and to me it did not disappoint. The book, although sometimes slow paced, kept me guessing and paying attention to the details and the ending opened doors for the sequel. A good job.
