School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7-12 Colman's latest offering is a story of teen romance and family loyalties. Summering with her aunt in New York City, Emily spends her weekend nights singing in a nearby coffeehouse. She becomes friendly with co-worker Mike, who agrees to walk her home each night. When Mike goes out of town, he sends his brother, Ken, to take her home. The two are accosted by a mugger, and Ken is shot protecting Emily. During his convalescence period, Ken imagines that he and Emily are in love. Emily realizes that if she abandons Ken, he will be hurt, but if she allows herself to be manipulated she will lose Mike. Mike, out of his love for his brother, is willing to give up Emily. The characters are well drawn and their individual shortcomings make them alive and believable. The plot moves at a pace rapid enough to hold the attention of reluctant readers. Nondemanding reading in a story that's a little different. Sharon Morrison, Klein High School, Tex.
