Produced by Monte and recorded in home studios, it's a testament to the innate musicality of these longtime collaborators, with a homemade feel. Most surprising are the subtleties delivered by Carlinhos Brown, the Afro-Brazilian powerhouse who contributes a raft of gently insistent percussion (and no small measure of guitar) that's miles away from his usual fare. Similarly, the futuristic prog-rock of Antunes is sidelined -- the addictive single "Já Sei Namorar" comes closest with its mix of acoustic guitar and electronic beats. But neither is this the Marisa Monte Show, although the wistful '70s feel of tracks such as "Carnavália" and "É Vocé" comes closest to the sun-dazzled warmth of her most recent work. Indeed, as their distinctive voices harmonize -- Monte's fluttering croon, Antunes's subsonic bass, and Brown's soulful tenor -- so do their creative energies. They sing about Christmas, about visiting friends, and about each other (on the title track manifesto, they explain "Tribalistas don't want to be right, Tribalistas don't want to be correct…Tribalistas are here to be the base of new construction"). Their affectless act of creation reminds anew of the casual brilliance of Brazilian music, and its power to surprise and inspire again and again.

The hype that was built up before the release of this joint effort by Arnaldo Antunes, Marisa Monte, and Carlinhos Brown was enormous. Luckily, the trio delivered and fulfilled all expectations, although perhaps in a different way than many people had anticipated. Tribalistas is a very good but simple and unpretentious record. The music consists of straightforward, largely acoustic, and very attractive pop songs sung by Marisa Monte and Arnaldo Antunes. The beautiful voice of Monte interacts in an interesting and fairly unusual way with the masculine, often guttural singing of Antunes. The album production by Monte and Alê Siqueira is very tasteful, and the sparse but elegant electronic backing and special effects contribute to make the music sound fresh and different. The musical focus of Tribalistas always lies in the strong melodies, both on the faster tracks -- as, for example, the captivating "Carnavália" and "Passe Em Casa" -- and the percussion-less ballads, such as "É Você" and "O Amor E Feio."

    ALL TIME BEST COLABORATION!

    This is a long awaited colaboration that truley sets your heart mind and soul adrift into another world. I don't speak one word of any of their languagess and still have found this and all of Ms. Monte's work masterpieces.

    Like a vacation to a new land

    The music is relaxing, interesting and diverse. I love the rhythms, melodies and harmonies. The music is great for reflecting and easy listening, yet energetic enough to wake you up or get you dancing. I wish they published the lyrics in English.
