About the Author

William H. Thomas was born in Tioga County, N.Y., and is the author of four previous books and two plays. Thomas’ most recent book, “What Are Old People For?” draws on sources as diverse as evolutionary biology, Shakespearean sonnets and Greek philosophy to make the case that elders belong in the heart of society.

A visionary and internationally renowned expert on aging, Thomas is an Ashoka Fellow and winner of the Heinz Award for the Human Condition. In partnership with his wife Judith Meyers-Thomas, he created The Eden Alternative, now an international nonprofit, and The Green House Project, both models to revolutionize nursing home care.

After graduating from Harvard Medical School, Thomas settled in a rural corner of Chenango County and built and operated an organic, wind and solar-powered farm for 16 years. The prequel to this novel, “In the Arms of Elders” tells the fictional autobiographical story of the Thomas’ journey to the land of Kallimos and the origins of The Eden Alternative.

Thomas is a geriatrician, musician, professor and public speaker, and now resides in Ithaca, N.Y. with his wife, three sons and two daughters.
