Overview

Marley the loveable, trouble-making yellow lab stars in another holiday adventure in the picture book Trick or Treat, Marley! by John Grogan, author of Marley & Me.

Marley’s family is throwing a Halloween party. Cassie and Baby Louie are having lots of fun putting up spooky decorations. And Marley’s having even more fun destroying them. The kids hang a creepy skeleton. Marley runs away with the leg bone. The kids string fake spider webs on the stairs. Marley sweeps them up with his tail. The kids carve pumpkins. Marley gets his head stuck in a jack-o’-lantern.

Worst of all—he eats every piece of Halloween candy!

Will Marley’s family be able to have any Halloween fun with their naughty puppy around?

Richard Cowdrey’s illustrations bring the charming and mischievous Marley to life.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
"The world's worst dog" of Grogan's 2005 bestseller Marly & Me stars in another holiday-themed picture book to accompany A Very Marley Christmas. The irrepressible pooch finds no shortage of Halloween mischief to get into, from getting a jack-o'-lantern stuck on his head, to popping orange and black balloons with his teeth, sweeping up cobweb decorations with his tail, and turning "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" (okay, it's not really a Halloween game) into "Steal the Tail from the Donkey." Marley goes too far when he beats all the neighborhood children in a candy treasure hunt and ends up with a tummy ache as his prize. But he redeems himself in the end by serving as an angelic dispenser of goodies to dinosaurs, flowers, Raggedy Anns, and dinosaurs who come to the door. Baby Louie's baby talk is a bit cloying ("Me no wait, too! Me Stupeman!"), and it beggars belief that this naughty dog would be left alone to welcome trick-or-treaters while Mommy and Dad blithely lead a trick-or-treat brigade through the neighborhood. But Marley's misadventures undeniably make for rollicking comedy, enhanced by Cowdrey's appealing pictures of the exuberant canine. Best illustration: Daddy dressed in ridiculous clown garb administering a stern lecture to the unrepentant Marley. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
