One of the world's leading experts on Trilobites, Richard Fortey gives the reader more then a wealth of information about a prehistoric life form that normally gets passed over and often ignored in the paleontological light of dangerous and weird sea creatures, Dinosaurs, and Ice Age mammals. However, since Fortey is a specialist, the book cannot became intricate in some areas that might leave a neophyte to the subject a little confused. Albeit Fortey does his best to write with simple language, the terminology of these creatures is enough to have flipping through pages referencing specimen name and location. This is not to deter any one from reading, but more a cautionary tale so the potential reader may do the minimal research that make this book an even more enjoyable read. Fortey's passion shows, and if it works, you'll leave this book with a newfound appreciation of Trilobites like I did!

Richard Fortey is a British paleontologist who fancies trilobite fossils. Trilobites are long extinct, but these arthropods are the signature fauna of the Paleozoic Era, and are ubiquitous in rocks of the proper age. Fortey explains these fossils, details what is known of the anatomy, behavior, and lineage of the various kinds of trilobites, and touches on all the issues and theories that occupy paleontologists - the causes of extinction, the evidence for and against punctuated equilibrium, the determination of dates, and the collection, analysis. classification, and museum curation of trilobites. This a great book if you want an introduction to the trilobites at an adult but not technical level. Good pictures.

Overview
Trilobites were shelled animals that lived in the oceans over five hundred million years ago. As bewilderingly diverse then as the beetle is today, they survived in the arctic or the tropics, were spiky or smooth, were large as ...
