Overview

"A chilling account of a killer who slipped through the hands of a daft justice system….Triple Cross chronicles one of the most vicious spies of our time." —Toronto Sun

In the years prior to 2001, no single agent of al Qaeda was more successful in compromising the U.S. intelligence community than Ali Mohamed. For almost two decades the former Egyptian army commando succeeded in living a double life—marrying an American woman, becoming a naturalized citizen, and infiltrating the CIA in Europe, the Green Berets at Fort Bragg, and the FBI in California—even as he helped orchestrate the campaign of terror that culminated in the 9/11 attacks.

Triple Cross is award-winning investigative reporter Peter Lance's chilling true account of the career of the master spy known to his al Qaeda brothers as "Ali the American"—an explosive narrative revealing the gaping holes in our nation's security net. Finally, coming off his previous FBI exposé, Cover Up, Lance also chronicles the collapse of the Brooklyn murder trial of former FBI agent Lin DeVecchio, a case that could well have revolutionized public understanding of the background of 9/11.

    Osama's Man in our Midst.

A book that shows the author investigated to the endth degree, and didn't engage in conspiracy theories about 9/11 is exactly what I wanted. TRIPLE CROSS is not to be missed. It's an engrossing read because of Lance's brilliant interweaving of the threads of al Qaeda's master spy, Ali Mohamed's triple-agent career and his parallel world of support operations for bin Laden. An Egyptian, Ali became a CIA operative in 1984, then an FBI informant, also joining the U.S. Army where he became a Special Forces advisor at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center at Ft. Bragg. Meanwhile, He trained Osama bin Laden's personal bodgyguard, twice moved bin Laden and his family - in 1991 and 1996, all while slipping in and out of the U.S. past watch lists, marrying an American woman, and becoming a naturalized citizen. From Silicon Valley to Long Island, NY, Ali Mohamed showed his unabashed allegiance to bin Laden, training al Qaeda members at the Calverton, LI shooting range in 1989, when he and they were photographed by the FBI, training the cell in NY that blew up the World Trade Center in 1993, and stealing secrets at Ft. Bragg and from the FBI in NYC and San Francisco. He shuttled between his quiet life as a Silicon Valley computer executive to Afghanistan and the Sudan to train al Qaeda terrorists in bomb-making and assassination, while seeking top security clearance from a Silicon Valley defense contractor. As the secret operative who photographed the U.S. Embassies in Nairobi and Dar Es Salaam, showing the photos to bin Laden who pointed to where the explosives should go, he personally planned and helped execute those bombings. Read TRIPLE CROSS and find out where this triple agent with the double life is today while U.S. planes bomb areas of Somalia to get others in the embassy plots. I liked many other things about TRIPLE CROSS - Lance's interviews, including some of the agents involved with Ali, the extensive documentation, the latest on Able Danger, and his tireless pursuit of the truth in order to make our country safer. To read him is to become infused with that same passion.

    more from this reviewer

    well written stunner

This biography is a shocker from the onset as Peter Lance does more than just look into the life of Al Qaeda operative Ali Mohamed; he asserts this man was the driver behind many of the terrorist attacks over two decades culminating with 9/11. Using chutzpah to a degree unheard of, he became an American citizen after marrying an American, but all that time "Ali the American" served as Chief of Security for bin Laden and Al-Zawahiri. He was an FBI informer and worked with the CIA in Europe while still holding his real job, serving as Chief of Security for bin Laden and Al-Zawahiri (can't say that duality enough). Then there is the Able Danger segue that will have readers floored that this man got away with what he did.

This well written stunner will leave readers wondering about our government claims of protecting us when he was welcomed to top secret information while setting up terrorist missions. Affirming the title of Triple Cross he applies to his subject, Mr. Lance exposes the government agencies whose failures the author asserts fundamentally led to 9/11; a horrific incident that could and should have been prevented. Perhaps the most frightening aspect is the implication of what else is the feds hiding. This is one nonfiction that has to be fiction; as the audience will continually say no way with each new revelation supported by strong evidence of yes way. Why didn't Cheney waterboard Mohammed who is in the Witness Protection Program having never been convicted of his crimes against humanity.
