Overview

Part of the 8-book Tamora Pierce reissue for Fall 2006, this title in the Circle of Magic quartet features spellbinding new cover art. Coincides with the release of WILL OF THE EMPRESS in trade pb.

Four elements of power, four mages-in-training learning to control them. In Book 2 of the Circle of Magic Quartet, earthquake damage has left Winding Circle vulnerable to pirate attack and Tris, Briar, Daja, and Sandry are working with the community to strengthen their defenses. When the pirate onslaught begins, two things become terribly clear: The pirates have a powerful new weapon--and they have an accomplice within Winding Circle. But they've failed to anticipate the fury of a young mage who has been betrayed once too often, and who has very stubborn, very loyal friends....

With the defenses of Winding Circle Temple seriously weakened by an earthquake, Tris and her fellow mages-in-training try to join their different magic powers to protect the Winding Circle community from a pirate attack.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Tris's Book, the second volume in Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic quartet, makes for an exciting listen in this dramatic reading by the author (as narrator) and a full cast. Trisana and her friends must use their magic to defend the coast of Emelan from vicious pirates on the attack. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
VOYA
This book picks up where the last book in the Circle of Magic series, Sandry's Book (Scholastic, 1997/VOYA December 1997), left off. An earthquake has just struck the Winding Circle Temple, new and beloved home of the four returning "misfits" from book one; Trisana, Sandry, Daja, and Briar. By combining their magic the four novice mages manage to stave off the worst of the damage, but the temple defenses are weakened, their supplies are depleted, and many mages are injured. It is the perfect time for an enemy to attack. Winding Circle is surrounded by a twenty-foot high wall, and the cove outside it by a strong protective spell net. It has not been attacked by pirates in the last four hundred years, but now the spell net has been damaged by an earthquake, and a powerful mage has joined forces with the Queen of the pirates. Behind a storm spell a huge fleet of raiders makes its way to the cove and begins to lay siege against the inhabitants. Winding Circle is a place of learning-they have no army, only mages and dedicates. The question is, will their powers be enough to defend the city against storm spells, battlefire, and deadly boom stones? What the invaders have not counted on are the four fledgling mages. Individually, Tris, Sandry, Daja, and Briar all sense that something sinister and out of the ordinary is going on. It is almost too late when they finally put all the pieces together and discover that the attackers have an inside link; Tris's visiting cousin Aymery, who owes the pirates money from gambling debts and has been bespelled to help them or die. Once again, the resolution comes when the four combine their magic to destroy the pirate fleet and save their home. Pierce fans are sure to be eager for the second book in this series. Tris, Sandry, Daja, and Briar are growing into stronger characters-as their magic continues to mature, so do they. The plot is quick-moving and suspenseful, the story is exciting, and the ending satisfying. The good news is that this title will be followed by Briar's Book and Daja's Book-hopefully in the very near future! Buy this one and know that it will circulate. Gr 5-10Tris and her three fellow mages-in-training have barely survived an earthquake that hit Winding Circle Temple. Now pirates are threatening to destroy the only real home the young sorcerers have ever known. As in Sandry's Book (Scholastic, 1997), the first installment in the series, the companions realize they can save themselves and their community only by combining powers and becoming one force greater than the sum of its parts. Reminiscent of Virginia Hamilton's Justice and Her Brothers (Harcourt, 1989), but without the rivalry and menace within the four-person "unit," Tris's Book focuses instead on the growing friendship among the young mages and their realization that their magical connections are beginning to seep into other facets of their lives. Individually, the mages are also struggling to control their powers, which come on in overwhelming surges when their possessors feel strong emotions. Readers on the brink of adolescence, struggling with new feelings and abilities, will appreciate the young sorcerers' efforts. Pierce has created another gripping adventure that's sure to please her many fans.Beth Wright, Edythe Dyer Community Library, Hampden, ME
School Library Journal
Gr 6-9-Author Tamora Pierce's distinctive voice is a good fit for the main narrator in the second installment in the Circle of Magic series (Scholastic, 1998). Matter-of-fact and precise, she draws listener further and further into the world of the four young mages-Tris, Sandry, Daja, and Blair-first introduced in Sandry's Book (Jan. 2003, p. 74). Supported by a full cast of talented performers reading the dialogue, Pierce engagingly spins a tale of growing friendship in the face of mortal challenge as the four young people struggle, with the help of their mage teachers Niko, Lark, Frostpine, and Rosethorn, to control heir emotions and their powers in order to defeat an attack against Winding Circle Temple by Pirate Queen Pahua and her army. Fans of the first audiobook in the series will quickly settle into the rhythms and cadences of this production.-Cindy Lombardo, Orrville Public Library, OH Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

    READ!!

One of the best authors I have ever know, Tamora Pierce, is back again. In this novel, she continues a series of events that occur to four young mages, each with different powers. In the book before, Sandry weaves each of their powers together to make them stronger. Now, they are able to use their powers to overcome something none of them have seen before. If you like fantasy and friendship, this is definately a book that you should read.

If you liked the first one, you'll love this one!!

I have read all of the CIRCLE OF MAGIC books. Out of all of them, this is definatly the best. in some of the other books, when something really magical is happening, it isn't very clear. But in this book, it is; and it's exciting all the way through. But you have to read the first one to like this one.i liked this book the most out of this series, then sandry's, then brairs, then daja's. they're all good though. I really like reading too. In school we have to keep track of the books we read, and i've read 28 during the school year. then i grabbed another sheet to keep track for this summer, and i've read 7 books since June 1st! Why, only this morning i finished the 6th book in the chronicles of narnia series. As queen of book worms, i hear-by give this book a 5-star rating.

One of her best books ever!

This is one of her best books ever! I like magic and fighting, so of course I liked this, as this was one of the most exciting ever. My favorite part is when Tris uses the wind to press those boom-stones flat against the walls to prevent the Winding Circle from getting hit, or when she used lightning to explode another. This was one of my most favorite books, and Tamora Pierce is my most favorite author.

    Wonderful

Although I read the series out of the intended order, this was by far my favorite. Tris is such a complicated character with a lot of depth and feeling. Read this book. I highly reccomend it.

    ¡Very good!

I think that this book was very well written. This book is great because you really get to know Tris and what she thinks. It is also real good because you can tell that the four really do become friends, even if they don't think they are. I just wish that she had written Sandry's book the same way she did this one, getting to know the character really well that is.

In the "Circle of Magic Tris's Book" the four young mages Tris, Briar, Daja, and Sandry help the Winding Circle Academy recover after a large earthquake shook the school. The story takes place in a fictional country called sumersea. they study their magic in the Dicipline Cottage. All of the student's try to help different people recover after the earthquake. While the Academy is still trying to get back on it's feet it is attacked by a giant fleet of pirate ships. The pirate's have discovered a new kind of weapon, one that cause's large destruction. The kids have to work together to fight off the pirates. I reccomend this book it has a lot of action because they have to learn to use their power's to save the school. This book is funny because they have a dog that can get into trouble. Lastely this book is surprising because someone at the academy is a traitor.

    Good ideas, little detail...

Tamora Pierce has the most horrible writing when it comes to explaining and detail. I think the book was pretty cool, but she explains the magic very vaguely, and that makes it very confusing to read. She just jumps form one thing to another. One minute Briar is eating and the next his mind is in the earth growing plants. It just makes a jump with no transition, so your lost A LOT. I bought the combo book of the first and second, and i plan on EVENTUALLY buying the other, but I doubt I will read this book again.

    A Book For All Ages

This book I have read at least four times in the whole of my reading years. I can assure fantasy-fiction readers everywhere that you will never find a better writer of a children's magic series then Tamora Peirce.
