Overview

All her life, Triss the squirrelmaid has suffered the tyranny of the evil ferret king King Agarnu and his daughter, Princess Kurda. But with the help of her fellow slaves, Shogg the otter and Welfo the hedgehog, Triss plans and executes a daring escape by sea. Meanwhile, in Mossflower forest, a new mystery has arisen: a pair of wandering Dibbuns has accidentally discovered what may be the long-lost secret entrance to Brockhall-original home of the warrior badgers. The threads of the story eventually come together when Triss happens upon Redwall in her flight and takes up the famous sword of Martin. The rest is Redwall history.

For ages 9 and above.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Brian Jacques weighs in with Triss, the 15th title in his Redwall series. Here, the enslaved squirrelmaid escapes by sea and a Dibbun duo discovers Brockhall's secret entrance. David Elliot's b&w illustrations introduce each chapter. (Sept.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
KLIATT
This is the 15th book in Jacques' epic series about adventurous woodland creatures, both noble and dastardly. Here our heroes are Triss the squirrelmaid, Shogg the otter, and Welfo the hogmaid, who escape from slavery and head across the sea toward Redwall. Nasty brother and sister ferrets Princess Kurda and Prince Bladd are on their trail, while a badger, an otter, and a hare head out to sea too, searching for the lost treasure of Brockhall. Fights, escapades, feasts and humor abound, along with lots of folksy British dialect. Redwall fans won't want to miss this latest fantasy, and those new to the series can easily pick it up here. Illustrated with b/w drawings. (Redwall series) Category: Hardcover Fiction. Gr 5 Up-Once again, Jacques has created a wonderfully imaginative and beautifully realized universe, filled to the brim with amazing and amusing characters. Triss the squirrelmaid (spiritual heiress to Martin the Warrior) escapes slavery, chased by the evil princess Kurda and her band of hired Freebooters. At the same time, two young rips named Scarum and Sagax head off to sea with their friend Kroova the otter, looking for adventure (and finding rather more than they bargain for). Meanwhile, there is something very scary lurking in the woods around Redwall Abbey. Almost every character speaks in elaborate dialect and there are several independent stories that converge at the end, requiring readers' concentration. There are also a few fairly graphic (though not gratuitous) scenes of violence. While this 15th book in the series is perhaps not the best place to start, even readers unfamiliar with the earlier titles will never feel lost, for there are plenty of references to earlier books.-Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Meet the Author

Brian Jacques
Brian Jacques

Brian Jacques (redwall.org) and his Redwall books are famous around the globe, with translations into seventeen languages.

Biography

The drawings that open the chapters in a Redwall book may look sweet, but Brian Jacques' fantasies are not for the faint of heart. Adventure, peril, betrayal, and downright slaughter abound in these hefty novels about the creatures -- mice, hares, moles, badgers, and sparrows -- who inhabit Redwall Abbey in medieval England.

Brian Jacques has had a life nearly as exciting as that of some of his characters: After dropping out of school in his native Liverpool at the age of 15, he traveled the world as a merchant seaman, visiting ports from America to Asia. Upon returning to England, he held a wide variety of jobs, from railway fireman to boxer among them. In the 1960s, he and his two brothers formed the Liverpool Fishermen, a folksinging group. Jacques also tried his hand as a playwright, producing several stage plays -- Brown Bitter, Wet Nellies, Scouse – about native Liverpudlians.

The Redwall stories, which were to earn him legions of fans, were born out of his time as a volunteer storyteller at the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind in Liverpool. Jacques maintains that his detailed writing style was developed here; he was forced to be as descriptive as possible, so his audience would be able to experience his stories as if they could see. He created the first Redwall story as a gift to the children of the school, but never intended to publish it commercially. Fortunately for his many fans on both sides of the Atlantic, a friend sent his first manuscript to a publisher, and the rousing series took off in England in 1986 and in the U.S. the following year with Redwall.

Jacques takes issue with the notion that his books are "fantasy" fiction, a description that he says "smacks of swords and sorcery and dungeons and dragons. . . . I like to think of my books as old-fashioned adventures that happened ‘Once upon a time, long ago and far away.'"

The novels appeal generally to an audience of nine- to fifteen-year-olds, but have admirers both younger and older. The tales pivot on the conflict between good and evil; good invariably triumphs. Indeed, morality issues are always clear in Jacques' books: cruelty, greed, and avarice are eradicated in all forms; bravery, loyalty, and resourcefulness reap rewards aplenty. When it comes to characters, though, Jacques is less simplistic: Martin the Warrior, who through his courage and cunning rose to become the noblest hero in the land, is given to impetuousness, and the miscreant Cluny has both good and bad sides, a la Long John Silver.

For female readers, the Redwall books can be extra satisfying. His female creatures are as adventurous as the males: they don't faint into their male counterparts' arms, but explore, swashbuckle, and rescue on their own. In Mariel of Redwall (1991), the courageous girl mousechild Mariel, thrown overboard by the Gabool, leader of the evil pirate Searats, exacts her own brand of revenge.

Jacques' usually swift pace sometimes comes to a slogging halt with extraordinarily detailed descriptions of the legendary Redwall feasts, right down to the last acorn and drop of buttercup and honey cordial. But the author is redeemed by his delicate interweaving of subplots, his memorable menagerie, his rollicking sense of adventure, and his ability to transport the reader into an entirely different world, a world that, as one critic for The New York Times put it, "is both an incredible and ingratiating place, one to which readers will doubtless cheerfully return."

Good To Know

Brian Jacques wrote his books in longhand or on a manual typewriter, or, if the weather permits, outdoors.

Despite his success as an author, Jacques continued to broadcast the weekly radio show, Jakestown, that he hosted before he wrote the Redwall books.

    Great book!

Another wonderful Redwall book. However, after reading a lot of them, I begin to notice a pattern. Although these are amazing stories, I wish there was a variation in plot structure once in a while.

This is for 'Agravaine' (The hater)

Triss is a great book. its exciting and the characters are great. this part is for agravaine: Triss is not shallow, and she is skilled with a sword because 1)her father, rocc arrem, was the best of his time, and 2)she had martin of redwall's spirit in her. and you say that this book is unrealistic. well, so are all of the other books. have you ever seen a talking mouse with a sword? even though the redwall books are obviously unrealistic they are still great. overall, 'Triss' is a great book.

    Great Book

I loved this book. I love every Redwall book that has ever been made so far. This entry, Triss, ranks right up there with my favorite RedWall books. Brian Jaques continues to engulf and amaze me with his magical tales of peril, humor, and friendship. The characters in this book are just as heroic/intimidating as you would expect. An amazing storyline with one of the best endings. I have to say my favorite books of the series- which ive read countless times.. would have to be the original- Redwall and The Outcast of Redwall. Amazing. I also liked Pearls of Lutra, Long Patrol, The Bellmaker, and Martin the Warrior. The others are VERY good, theyre just not as Perfect as the above mentioned. I reccomend this series, and this book, to everyone. It is amazing and it is one of the best series ever. You should also check out Jaques other series the Flying Dutchman. Great, humorous books though very sad in a Very unique way. Brian Jaques is the best writer alive period!

Okay, Okay; I must admit that these areTHE BEST BOOKS EVER WRITTEN!

He's done it again-'Triss' is the most hilarious, couragous book ever written by Brian. (Especialy when Plugg Firetail's-but wait-you just need to read the book). When Triss and CO. escape from the vermin, the evil White Stoats pursue them relentlessly. They meet hedgehogs, otters, mice, squirles, and-(as always-I swear, Brian has simply recreated them)-hares. they journey to Redwall and there they here that a giant three-headed serpent is on the loose in Mossflower. Will Triss and friends ever find a home? Read the book and find out!
