Nile Kinnick won the Heisman Trophy in 1939 and perished in 1943 during WWII; Fred Becker was Iowa's first All-American football player (1916) and died fighting in France during WWI; Jack Trice died after a football game in 1923 and today the Iowa State Cyclones play in a football stadium named after him; Johnny Bright was the nation's top offensive star for three years in the 1950s at Drake University and went on to a long and successful career in the Canadian Football League.
