Shaken by the sight, Joe starts to investigate what he hopes in an isolated incident." "Days later, after the discovery of a small herd of mutilated cattle, Joe realizes this something much more terrifying than he could have imagined. Local authorities are quick to label the attacks the work of a grizzly bear, but Joe knows otherwise. The cuts on the moose and the cattle were too clean, too precise, to have been made by jagged teeth. Are the animals only practice for a killer about to move on to another, more challenging prey?" Soon afterward, Joe's worst fears are confirmed. The bodies of two men are found within hours of each other, in separate locations, their wounds eerily similar to those found on the moose and cattle. There's a vicious killer, a modern-day Jack the Ripper, on the loose in Saddlestring - and it appears his rampage is just beginning.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Box's riveting fourth Joe Pickett adventure (after 2003's Winterkill) opens on a disturbing note, with the Wyoming game warden's chance discovery of the oddly mutilated body of a moose near his favorite fishing hole. When several mangled cows and two grisly human corpses are added to the macabre menagerie, Joe reluctantly joins a task force to investigate. Bud Barnum, the corrupt sheriff of Twelve Sleep County, attributes the mutilations to birds or a notorious grizzly bear from Joe's jurisdiction, but Joe isn't convinced. Enter paranormal expert Cleve Garrett, who zealously follows mutilation and alien sightings in his recreational vehicle laboratory. Despite ridicule from the task force, Joe interviews Garrett, who supplies little fresh information but gives off creepy vibes. The clues that the quietly heroic Joe gathers from many disparate witnesses, including his own young daughters and a mentally incapacitated fisherman, may point to the otherworldly, but readers will be well satisfied with the all-too-earthly solution to the bizarre crimes. With its credible and sensitively drawn characters, loads of interesting tidbits about the natural world and timely plot, this skillfully crafted page-turner should have wide appeal. A moose is dead, its face flayed away. Then cattle suffer a similar fate. Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett jumps to the right conclusion: a vicious killer is getting ready to test his skills on humans. From the Anthony Award-winning author. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Dead fish and game are only the appetizers for Warden Joe Pickett's biggest problems in his fourth case. It's obvious that cavalier local fisherman Jeff O'Bannon is to blame for the fish floating belly-up in Crazy Woman Creek. But who's killed the elk, excised the flesh from half his face, and dragged off his enormous carcass? Who's killed 12 head of Don Hawkins's cattle in exactly the same way? And has this slaughter of innocents been nothing more than preparation for the remarkably similar murders of ranch hand Tuff Montegue and water-engineering exec Stuart Tanner? Robey Hersig, the County Attorney heading the hastily assembled Northern Wyoming Murder and Mutilations Task Force, lists the likeliest causes: "BIRDS . . . CULTS . . . DISTURBED INDIVIDUALS . . . ARABS . . . GOVERNMENT AGENTS . . . GRIZZLY BEAR . . . ALIENS." But Joe, skeptical of all these explanations, demands the right to investigate on his own. Even though his mortal enemy, Sheriff Bud Barnum, keeps reminding him he's only a fish-and-game warden, nobody can deny that Joe's pulled off some spectacular victories in the past (Winterkill, 2003, etc.). Not this time, though. The fact-based mutilations are so outre you just know the answer's going to be a letdown, and it is-even though Joe and his family sweat out suspenseful duels with a self-styled paranormal expert and a trusted neighbor. A lyrical thriller

In Saddlestring, Wyoming, game warden Joe Pickett and his two daughters are fishing when they see dead fish floating in the water. As they walk the river, he finds a man who is taking the fish for sport and throwing them back in the water. While Joe lectures him about the ethics of what he is doing he smells something rancid. The angler points him in the direction of a dead moose. When he goes to investigate, he finds that the moose was mutilated with surgical precision; his organs removed as if someone took them for a trophy......................... Not long after that a call comes in that some cows were killed, just like the moose with no signs of predator or clues to who or what did it. People in Saddlestring are very nervous and property values plummet even though there is an economic boom going on thanks to new technology that allows natural gas to be taken easier out of the ground. When two men are found in the same condition as the cattle and the moose, a task force is formed but Joe goes his own way to find out what is turning his town upside down.......................... Award winning author C.J. Box has a natural gift for describing the beauty of nature contrasting it to the depravities of man. This is a very cleverly constructed mystery, with many different sub-plots tying back to the main storyline. A touch of mysticism and the supernatural enhance the battle between good and evil and it is judiciously applied so readers will have no trouble believing in it. TROPHY HUNT is must reading for cerebral mystery fans........................ Harriet Klausner

    Another Winner in the Series

Box has a great lead character in Pickett and the supporting cast is equally strong. His writing style is smooth and keeps one hooked from the very first page. I was not crazy about the plot - though it was filled with twists and turns, some suspended belief to a degree. That's fine in crime fiction obviously - I just felt this one was a little TOO over the top. Still a great read nonetheless; if you like Box and the Pickett series, you won't go wrong here.

A good story, but goes on and on.

I have had a good time reading all of C.J. Box's stories, but this book Trophy Hunt doesn't arise up to the others. In this story the clues are all over the place, the auther not seeming to pull them togeather. He has to many side stories going on at the same time and the book just seems to go on and on. In my opinion the story could have been more crisp reading with 75 less pages. It seems to me that Box had a good idea for a story but used to much filler to get to the last chapter. Bottom line: Between the first chapter and the last, to much filler. Over all not a bad story, but make no mistake Trophy Hunter is not one of C.J. Boxs best.
