Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This text is part of a series that takes a look at different geographic features around our world. In this particular entry, the reader learns about Tropical Rain Forests, areas found on the equator, which are notable for their high temperatures and even higher humidity. This easy to follow book has a five chapter set-up followed by sections called, in order, True Statistics, Resources (a current grouping of books and websites and places to visit that address the topic with creativity and well-researched information), Important Words, an Index, and About the Author. The chapters focus on the various layers of canopy, the plants and animals found within and how all support a healthy ecosystem, the tribes living in the rain forests, the uses of the rain forest in today's world, and the delicate balance that must be maintained if we are to keep the rain forests alive and healthy. The author notes that rain forests are being destroyed faster than any other ecosystem because of the amazing finds in medicines, day-to-day products and crop production; further, climate change, helped along by the destruction of so many trees in the rain forest, will certainly impact us all. Excellent photos and graphics throughout further explain or share everything from the fact that parrots are found in every tropical rain forest in the world to the surprising information that cattle ranching is the biggest source of forest loss in the Amazon rain forest. This is a great book in a strong series "A True Book" for younger students looking for information about geographic regions on Earth. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
