Yet Trorian's belt may be no more than myth and legend, a story grown around great men who lived hundreds of years ago. Now the war between Alsheba and Pandropolis still rages on, and Tark finds himself embroiled in a mesh of lies and corruption, challenged from every quarter. His father favours his cousin Dimitri Diatronis, yet soon there is another contestant for Trorian's belt in the enigmatic figure of Mitra Mitraeous, a man who stirs Tark to forgotten memories of whom they might have been hundreds of years previously.
