Overview

These group performances represent some of the more commercial releases of the folk revival. Beginning with Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene" performed by The Weavers and the hit "Tom Dooley" by The Kingston Trio continuing through to recordings by Jim Kweskin's Jug Band, this collection demonstrates how more "authentic" and "traditional" folk songs were sanitized and popularized for mass consumption. It's an interesting reminder of how essentially neutral material can take on political weight due to the actions of the performers themselves, as in the case of The Weavers.
