Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Divided into themes like "Musical Miracles" and "Flutes and Panpipes," Troubadour's Storybag: Musical Folktales of the World by Norma J. Livo presents 38 stories. Each of its six sections ends with a list of suggested activities, like finding pertinent pictures and recordings; meeting with musicians and instrument makers; and making instruments from household items and found objects. This collection appeals to the ear more than the eye-it is unillustrated-but is a useful resource for discovering the overlapping roles of story and song.
Children's Literature - Uma Krishnaswami
Stories, says the introduction to this lively collection, are "light-as-air, deep-as-breath, transforming heirlooms passed down with beauty and form." Here Livo brings together thirty-nine tales about music or musical instruments, from selected cultures around the world. Favorites like "The Magic Flute" rub shoulders with murder mystery tales, as well as variants of familiar stories. How's "The Bee, the Harp, the Mouse and the Bum-Clock," for a rollicking version of Jack and the Beanstalk? The book includes an index and suggestions for enhancing the storytelling experience.
