School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5 The 1899 Arnot (Pa.) coal miners' strike is the basis for the plot of this personal narrative of Rosie Wilson, the daughter of a miner. When the mine owners refuse to negotiate and make the necessary safety repairs, the miners strike. They solicit the assistance of Mary Harris (Mother) Jones, the wayfaring spokesperson for laborers and union organizer, and she whips the community into a unified force. Meanwhile, the Wilson family is split into factions by their differing views of labor organization. At best, this is mediocre historical fiction. In the ``Author's Note,'' Rappaport mentions that she reconstructed this story from articles in the Blossburg Advertiser , evidently a local period newspaper. However, the only documentation located that relates to this story is the Arnot strike and Mother Jones's tactical dishpan armies. The remainder of this storycharacters, dialogue, and extraneous actionis assumed to be fictitious. The writing is melodramatic and insipid. Readers are not given enough background information, and the lack of character development hinders interest. Mary Beth Burgoyne, Mesa Public Library, Ariz.
