Overview

The third thrilling installment of the middle-grade fantasy series from bestselling authors Garth Nix and Sean Williams.

When an old man in an even older house dies mysteriously, twins Jack and Jaide Shield find themselves drawn into a dangerous treasure hunt in some deep, dark places. Jack and Jaide are troubletwisters -- gifted with magic and cursed by The Evil, a force that will stop at nothing to destroy their world. The old house holds something very important to The Evil -- and Jack and Jaide must race to find it, even though they don't know what it looks like or where it is.

Jack and Jaide aren't the only ones searching for the treasure. And as the mystery gets bigger and bigger, they're not sure who they can trust. Even friends are beginning to act suspicious. And their father, who should be their strongest ally, is leading them into treacherous territory.

At the heart of all magic is mystery, and at the heart of this mystery is nothing less than the key to controlling magic. It's going to take the two troubletwisters to the edge of their Gifts in order to figure this one out.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for TROUBLETWISTERS BOOK ONE: THE MAGIC:

"Full of adventure and the unexpected, the first book in Nix and Williams's new series is delightfully twisted. The pacing is perfect, the setting is eerily dark, the faceless Evil rings true, and the resolution is satisfying." -- BOOKLIST

Praise for TROUBLETWISTERS BOOK TWO: THE MONSTER:

"This gripping fantasy for the middle-grade set delivers magic and delightful dollops of ick." -- KIRKUS REVIEWS

Children's Literature - Sarah Gilbreath
Jack and Jaide are tween-aged twins, and they live a pretty normal life in a small town with their mother and grandmother—except their grandmother is the warden of Portland and they are junior wardens, or Troubletwisters. Their father is a warden, too, but for Jack and Jaide’s safety, he’s far away. When an older, wealthy man in the town turns up dead their dad suddenly reappears, asking for their help. The twins have to find a magic item, and fast, before The Evil finds it first. The only problem: the people they think they can trust most might turn out to be their biggest enemies. The book is fast-paced and suspenseful, the very definition of a page-turner. The book is part of the “Troubletwisters” series co-written by well-known authors Nix and Williams. The characters are multi-faceted, and the ending will surprise the reader. It would be excellent for any tween readers who like suspense, adventure, or low fantasy. The pacing of the story also makes it good for reluctant readers. Since the main characters are both a boy and a girl, the story could appeal to anyone, no matter what preference the reader has for the main character’s gender. Although Nix is known for writing fantasy books for young adults, this book would be best for a slightly younger audience. Highly recommended. Reviewer: Sarah Gilbreath; Ages 9 to 12.
