Overview

Are you a troubletwister?

Jaide and Jack Shield's lives are changing in a very, very strange way. The weather is turning against them. Magical disasters occur when they're around. And a mysterious explosion has just destroyed their house...from the inside.
Without knowing why, the twins are stolen away to live with Grandma X--a relative they've never, ever met. At Grandma X's house, things are even stranger. Weather vanes point in the opposite direction of the wind. Doors appear and disappear. Cats talk.
Jaide and Jack don't know the reason behind all this strangeness. They don't know that they're troubletwisters, and that they must defend the world against a dark, evil force. The time has come for them to discover the truth--and the powers that come with the truth.
Are they ready?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this enjoyable romp, first in a planned series, 12-year-old twins Jaide and Jack Shield, who have just had their house blown up under mysterious and possibly magical circumstances, are unceremoniously shipped off to spend time with their eccentric Grandma X. There, they soon discover that they are "trouble-twisters," apprentice magicians just coming into their powers and, thus, wildly dangerous. Grandma X's job is to train them and to keep them safe both from themselves and from "The Evil," a monstrous force from another universe that is trying to conquer our world by telepathically taking over individual creatures, melding them into what looks like "a giant worm... made up of rats and cockroaches and red ants and other nameless insects, all with white eyes and all stuck together, crawling and writhing like a single creature." When "The Evil" proves stronger than expected, the twins are left to defeat the monster unaided. Although not a particularly original offering in the "magical children destined to take on powerful foes" genre, it should still prove satisfying to a wide range of middle school readers. Ages 8–12. Great read--not only for kids!

I picked this book up because I love Garth Nix' Abhorsen series (as my name might indicate...). This did not disappoint. I like that the book didn't give out all its secrets at once and kept me turning the pages to see what happened next! I passed this book on to my sisters who are several years younger than I and they enjoyed it as well as I did and we are all looking forward to the next book in the series. I love how Garth uses animals in his books and this one had plenty to go around (and then some!). Pick it up for the kid in your life, and you just might find yourself reading it right along with them!

    Troubletwisters

Jaide kept her head down as she struggled, trying not to meet the gaze of those terrible eyes, the eyes that she felt were drawing her in, sucking her into some other place, some other dimension.

Yet another example of literary excellence

I must admit, I've become a rather critical reader over the last few years, and though I read everything Garth Nix publishes, I have yet to find anything in his works to criticize. On the contrary: his writing never ceases to amaze me. Through this book, I was introduced to Sean Williams' writing style as well, and I am happy that I was. I look forward to reading more of Williams' work! This book is an excellent example of what good writing can do, regardless of it being a "kid's book." I love the unique touch given to magic and magical events yet again, and I cannot wait until the rest of the series is released! I expect it will be one magical ride for sure. Though it is slightly off-topic, I was first introduced to Nix's work through "The Ragwitch" and the Abhorsen series. I won't be melodramatic and say Nix's writing is what made me want to be a writer, because even as a child I had determined to be so - but his writing DID make me realize I wanted to be a fantasy writer in particular, and his work continually inspires me to improve and seek new writing horizons. Back on topic, this book has made me intrigued to get to know more of Williams' work, so I will be seeking out his previously published works now as well. The bottom line: if you enjoy a good fantasy novel (or simply good writing in general), GET THIS BOOK! Then move on and acquire even more books created from the wonderful minds of these two authors.

Modern times with a mythological twist

Garth Nix is one of my all time favorites and I was super psyched to see he was collaborating with Sean Williams, another great author. Troubletwisters does not disappoint. It has the tongue and cheek juxtaposed with the darkest most maniacal creations of the human imagination that Nix does so well. Troubletwisters has everything a fantasy reader could ever hope for - mythology and adventure, but it also is set in modern times, so the characters are more relate-able.

I am a twin and I wish that the two of us had secret Egyptian powers and a sacred task.
